Slagging off Fane 12-250TC

On a couple of occasions I have complained a bit about the bass on the Fane 12-250TC.
I recently built up the first amp for a good while that had tone controls.
With the bass turned up the Fane has some serious bass.
I was surprised how much.
I take back what I said previously.
Looking at the spec's it has 5Hz more bass than the Fane 15-300TC
I have a pair of 12-250TC's in a sealed box which sounds great.

the driver needs a very big (like 2-300L) ported cabinet to give real low bass, and does it only on low power (<20W). That is how i will use mine. But i'm still in the designing phase of the project. But it could go to an F3 of just below 30Hz if the cabinet is big enough.

Sealed it does only 45-50Hz in a reasonable cabinet. On low power you could eq more bass, that is true, but on it's own it won't do it.

I also tried a transmission line design with it, but that cabinet is so big that it's not usable in a normal house. And the response stay ragged. So reflex it will be i think.

I have a pair of Fane 12-250 in 57.5 litre (2 cu ft) cabinets. (Aperiodic)
Sound very good to me, just a little short of bass, I tried EQ but it made them buzzy. I'll probably add a subwoofer system eventually but I'm not in any hurry with that as they're very pleasant on their own.

wel, i finished my design (but can't work with cad so no drawing, just numbers). It seems that with using a 174L ported cabinet with a port tuned to low i can get a flat response to 30Hz, as long as i don't go over 20w (otherwise xmax is limiting the response). I'll build that cabinet soon and post it here. My amp will be the ACA amp i recently aquired (8W class A, in mono it's 15W class A). At 98dB sensivity that 9dB gain should be enough for a small living room as i never will listen near that 110dB that a pair would give as theorectical max volume at 8W.

I actually think the 15" is better, but neither of them can beat a good coaxial for quality, unless you want a very specific off axis response (the Fanes off axis response can be better for some indoor useage scenarios).
But if you consider value for the money? Very hard to beat the Fane 12-250TC or the 15-300TC.

well, i'm soon going to know how much bass these fanes give. I got a pair ready and my design is also fully ready now. I even draw a cad version as this holiday i finally learned how to use a cad software and this is a rendering of how it will be. 174L ported tuned to 30Hz a bit modelled to the style of the Altec 620 cabinet. Sims show that it's possible, but now it's time to get the wood and make some sawdust...

well, i got the wood (hard to find still, and still a bit expensive), but it's a slow and complex build, i'm working fulltime and got a lot of other things to do also. But i'll keep you up to date.

And toppings, that slot is already 20cm wide, 4cm high and 3.8cm deep, tuned to a maximum power of 20w. This cabinet is not ment to be more as xmax limits it's response to that power. But this gives me already 106dB max volume for one cabinet, more than i ever will use. And the amp that will drive it is an ACA (now in stereo, but a second one to run both in mono is planned). so maximum power is 15w and a max output of 105dB

How was the build?
