What a coincidence !
You can see the penalties in these summaries, in our case, the hero was goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, he contained three shots from the opponents !!!

Yes, unfortunately penalties defined the Italy vs Spain match... Spain played much better football but... as we say in Europa, penalties are a lottery 🙁
Francisco (from Spain, of course)

Just the worst way possible to end a professional match, they should have done away with this 40 years ago...what to do instead? How about GG overtime without goalies? Or reduce team player count every 10 minutes till someone scores. The lack of popularity of soccer in the US is mostly blamed on pace and lack of scoring, but I think ties and PK endings are just as much of a factor

We also played better, and we had more chances to score, but the Colombians did not raise a defense, they raised a carnage!
Nosotros tambien jugamos mejor, y tuvimos más oportunidades de gol, pero los colombianos no plantearon una defensa, plantearon una carnicería !

Penalty shoot-out (association football - Wikipedia)
Well, there has to be a winner in defining games and the way that has always existed is the shoot-out on penalties.
But I would definitively remove the VAR, there was a clear penalty that the operators of the same did not notify the referee. The result would have been an Argentine victory if there had been a good refereeing.
Obviously the penalties are creating controversy ..... as always!
Maybe Steve can give us his opinion of this match (impartial, of course)
Robbery from Denmark? The controversial penalty that led England to the final

I only saw the highlights of the Denmark game, but England seemed to have most of the chances. Kaspar Schmeichel was excellent in the Denmark goal as ever. He is a bit of a hero in Britain for his FA Cup Final performance for Leicester against Chelsea this year.

I thought it was a penalty. Sterling was tripped surely?
Congrats to Argentina against Brazil of course. Good win by the sound of it. Messi's last game?

Of course we are terribly excited for tonight's game. Everybody singing that silly song "Football's coming Home"! We can hope. This is a very good England side.

6 hours to go, and the local "Honest Politician" pub has a huge queue in England shirts... 😀
Car horns bipping.
Gonna be a long day. 😱
I've got my Italian ticket at 6-1, but will happily tear it up later.

Football: (soccer in these parts)
The most unsportsmanlike sport on the planet.
There are unsportsmanlike situations, not "unsportsmanlike sports"
For example :

The rules of boxing are clear, also those of football and all sports.
Not respecting the rules is a totally different matter, as in the forums ! 😎😀

I do not understand that ! 😕
You bet on Italy?
Here there are less than two hours until the meeting.
I'm sorry, but my surname and descent force me to encourage Italy, but if it helps you win some money with gambling, I wish you luck!
Please control your drinking in the pub ...... !!
...........

Thanks for your wishes !
They have been fulfilled, we beat the "cuckoo" Brazil in his own house, despite pressure from the ruling government .....

It will not be Messi's last game, now he is in his best moment! and enjoying playing for his country without the pressure of Barcelona and its contracts.

+1
I am NOT watching the football tonight!
So that I’m not making an empty statement, let me explain my feelings. In the sports I enjoy, the players do everything in their power to hide an injury. In fact when a player fakes a penalty or an injury, a penalty is awarded against them. It’s called Unsportsmanlike Conduct and further qualified as Embellishment. While I enjoy football (soccer) as a sport, the fakery is beyond my ability to focus on the match. It is such a detriment that I believe the beautiful game should be renamed the ugly game. The most unsportsmanlike sport on the planet.
As the old joke goes
'football, 90 minutes of pretending you are injured. Rugby 80 minutes of pretending you aren't'
'football, 90 minutes of pretending you are injured. Rugby 80 minutes of pretending you aren't'
I think that in all sports in which there is physical contact between the contestants there is the risk of some inappropriate behavior.
The "Fair Play", in tennis, for example, is a thing of the past.
Starting the game by taking the first serve "from below" was frowned upon, not so much anymore.
It started with Chang, now Bublik, Kirgios, and many more will continue to do so.
P.S:
The regulations do not prohibit it, in fact it is the evolution of tennis that caused it to be taken from the top, in the origins of tennis it started from the bottom!

In rugby, many things happen hidden from refereeing within the scrum .....
Flippin' Penalties again. 2-3.
You bet! At 6-1, the best bet in the beginning of the tournament.
Didn't fancy France at 4-1. Very fragile team. Disunited dressing room.
Belgium too old at 4-1. Legs get tired. Injuries kick in.
England are improving. We will be a force in the Qatar World Cup. But the Italians were better than us.
Bukayo Saka was inconsolable after his Penalty miss. But, hey, he stepped up for it. And got a hug from Gareth, who has been there before.

Examples please. And not from the 1970s when the welsh front row had about 3 teeth between them. Now days with each pack at international level being some 750kg things are carefully watched. But you don't see them rolling around on the ground feigning agony from a tiny trip.
The underhanded serve is not only not against the rules, it is a wonderful strategy when your opponent is caught off guard. Being a competitive player since I was a child, the underhanded serve was the serving version of the drop shop. It also came in really handy when I was no longer competing and along came the dislocated shoulder on my racquet hand.
