12 inch woofer in 55 liters from 40 Hz with decent sensitivity

I'm building a new woofer section into my TV unit, and I can either go with a 40 liter enclosure fitting an 8 inch woofer, or a 55 liter enclosure fitting a 12 inch woofer. The latter would of course be best with regards to sensitivity and cone area.

But I'm having trouble finding a fitting 12" woofer that:

- Costs less than ~$150
- Can reach 40 Hz in 55 liters with decent sensitivity
- Can reach ~1500 Hz cleanly

All the ones I've been looking at are either too low sensitivity, or too high to make 40 Hz out of 55 liters. I reckon something around 93 db/w would be perfect, but very few of them out there... At least under ~$150.

Any recommendations?

I don't think youre going to find anything that fits your needs in that price range. I'm not aware of any decent 12" driver that will play down to 40 Hz in a 55 l box, at least not for under $200, let alone go up to 2000 Hz smoothly. The Eminence Delta Pro 12 is a nice cheaper driver for around $140, but won't go flat to 40 Hz... maybe 50 Hz F3 in 55 l.

That does look like great woofer.
as a bass driver true 2pi anechoic sensitivity is 89dB/2.83V (not as high as the midband sensitivity of 96dB suggests) but yes a great option for a 12” woofer in <50L and f10 about 21Hz.

Please, tell me what 12" did you find that does 93dB/F3=40Hz/55 liters ? I find that really hard to believe.

I guess you haven't read correctly. He did ASk today whether someone knows such a driver. He didn't claim that he has found one.

The 12n630 that was mentioned is only recommended up to 300Hz by the manufacturer. It this weren't the case I would have used it a long time ago for an MTM.

I'll look more into into the 12N630! Although a bit pricy.

It would seem not many 12" woofers exists in between the super low sensitivity subwoofers and the really high sensitivity pro drivers for some reason... Maybe a niche market.

Best I've found is the Eminence B102 which is 92-93 db with an F3 of about 40 Hz in 55 liters, but thats a 10 inch.

Maybe this one?
Claim -6 at 38 but not sure about volume.
SOVEREIGN 12-500LF

Already sim'ed and requires a huuge enclosure unfortunately

Normally you don't make such sudden jumps from 8" to 12" units without considering drive units class in between.

I'm aware, thanks 🙂 But off topic.

Have you had a look at the SB Acoustics line? IIRC there's a decent 12" midbass in there, which might do what you're after.

You're up against Hoffman's Iron law here, and the 1500Hz cutoff makes life difficult: a 12" PA subwoofer driver might manage what you're after, but they get rough above 1kHz.

Which specifications are you willing/able to compromise?

Faital 12PR320 ? 55 liters a little short maybe, worth a sim, maybe with the help of the room gain plus close wall....
Not really. 50 liters vented @34:

Is it the baffle step we can see on the measurement, or ?

Long time ago I simulated both the 12 and the 15PR from Faital, both sealed. Qtc 0.7. And they had the same -F3 around 45 hz circa.... ,I don't remember at all each volume of the sim unfornatully !

The good thing, being sealed the sim also showed good -F10 behavior .

The 12PR320 seems linear for a PA. Still looking for good distorsion measurement though.... rare with the PA drivers on the Net.

From this, as i've understood it, he did found some but not under 150$.

Also, if it is to be 93dB, woofer needs to be 97dB raw for 93dB to remain after you factor in at least 4dB of baffle step correction.

This is definitely the case for some dsp correction.

Haven't sim'ed anything over ~$200 😉

We're talking about pre-BSC sensitivity here, i.e spec-sheet sensitivity.
