Yesterday i came across these speakers which immediately bought because they are full range drivers ans i was looking for a pair to build a set of speaker boxes. It says dew dortmund and that's all. Does anyone have information about these speakers? How good are they...?
They sounds wonderful when i hooked them up to my sansui au-alpha 999. However one speaker still needs some repair i think, i better take it to a professional speaker repairman to get it done right.
Any suggestions on how to fix it? You can see it in the photos, the one with damage gives a strange rattle.

I found some information on german oldschool hifi pages about DEW. The company built only the magnets for companies like Saba, Heco, Grundig, Isophon.
Usually these types seem to be used in old Radios or Dual speakers.
That's all I could find about them - real vintage stuff!

They are around 7.5 inches... Almost 8.
The previous owner said he accidentally blasted way too much volume with bass which destroyed the edge. So he has used some rubber based gum which doesn't work as intended. I normally use liquid gasket maker on such things which works acceptably. Especially for small tears and holes but this looks much worse in my opinion.
That glue he used wasn't that flexible as well.

Could the rattle be due to the fact that the voice coil/former was overheated, become misshapen, and is now scraping in the magnet gap?
Try pressing down on the cone gently and symmetrically with your thumbs in order to judge if the voice coil is the source of the rattle.
I have seen some very similar to those. The dustcap is quite unique.
If the VC has gone, it will not be easy or cheap to get it fixed.

I can make out that cross shape on the dust cap in the image of the damaged driver, Dave.
I think yours are not just similar, they appear identical.

The key to say is the dustcap, it is a very unique open weave in a shiny goldish material. zooming in it has a similar weave… but the colour.

Now im thinking of a good box for this, i know someone who can build beautiful boxes but he needs schematics. I would prefer a tower like model. Any recommendations?

At this late date they need to be [re] broken in, then measure the T/S specs for each; otherwise, any idea what era they are? '50s, '60s, ??
For instance, a '50s era DIY book lists a 60 Hz Fs, 8 ft^3 with a vent area [Av] = [Sd] for 8" drivers whereas a '60s, '70s era books lists box sizes based on driver [Fs], [Av], so at the very least need to know its [Fs].
