[INDIA] LM3875 at Lamington Road?

Hi Fellow DIYers,

I am a complete novice at electronics. Would like to try for a gainclone, after having completed a few LED projects :cannotbe:

I live in Mumbai, India and want to know the name of a good electronics shop in Lamington Road, where I would get LM3875 or even LM1785. I tried a few shops and they dont stock it and charge close to 150 Rupees for it. It would be great help if I get the address or phone number of a good shop to get all the parts.

Thanks in advance.
🙄

Also I would like to know if we all get together, people from Mumbai, and order PCBs and boxes, knobs, etc , and make something standardized. I think 2U rack space will be too big a box and 1U should do it, unless you use a really big transformer.

It will be available with Amar radio. The shop is near the bridge of Grant road station. When u come to electronics market from Grant station, u pass under the bridge. After the bridge tunnel just turn left & go towards masjid. Just before masjid Amar radio is situated. I always buy sample IC's from him. he has got many odd IC's.

wipeout, ajit

Welcome to the board. Nice avtar, wipeout!

As for the LM3876/3886, you can try one of these places (SP rd, b'lore). No guarantees that any of them will stock them

a) Cee Pee Electronics
b) Om Electronics
c) Kothari Electronics
d) Universal Electronics

BTW, there's an Amar Radio in b'lore too, I dont know if he'd also have these ICs.

I got mine the wrong way: as samples from NS. I know it's wrong... given a chance, I'd pay NS for their troubles.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info, will hunt for Amar Radio, next time I go there.

I didnt mean to hide my identity, my real name is Ajay Lewis. I live in a suburb called Borivali in Mumbai. I am interested in electronics but was never really serious about it and gave up either after looking at complex circuits and getting disheartened:whazzat: or making small ones which failed due to my lack of soldering skills.

The avatar is Barney from the Simpsons, Roadkill is a nice login, similar to wipeout.

Thanks for the info Palesha, will hunt for Amar Radio, next time I go there. BTW RU Palesha of Palesha Audio fame?

Kudos,

Ajay Lewis.

Hi Roadkill,

Thanks for your reply. I was kind of expecting your reply given your familiarity with the dungeons of audio as well as SP road. Well I had checked at Amar Radio(Bangalore) and OM electronics without any luck. I will try the others too and post back.

Wipeout,

Palesha is indeed Mr Mahendra Palesha of Palesha audio. You wont expect whom you run into here at this forum 🙂.

Cheers.

ajit

Dear Ajit,
It was nice u were looking at Amar radio in Banglore. He is keeping all industrial stuff. He hardly deals in any consumer electronics.
Also is Kothari electronics in Mumbai. He repairs multimeters.

Dear wipeout,
Go and get it. If u any problem let me know. It is better u go for LM 3886 because it has mute and high power. There r two version in LM 3886. One is with heatsink & one without, plastic encapsulated. Price will be Rs.130/~Rs.150/-. If more stock price low.

Wish u happy DIY

This is a lovely price! The only quotes I've got on L.Road are for about Rs.350 each. As you probably know, I'm trying to build a pair of active speakers where I'll need a total of ten of these chips for the pair. This price difference becomes substantial. 🙂

how about a group buy

Tarun,

Ten 3886s wow good number. You may be needing the PCB/Heatsink/traffos etc etc for those monsters....how about taking us along and pointing us for the sources....or better still organising a groupbuy...At least for the PCBs groupbuy would make a lot of sense unless you have already got yours...and that preamp of yours was also cool. How does it sound ??

Preamp is not yet ready 🙁 But it'll get over soon... I'm going to resume work on it next week. Paapi pet, etc etc...

Regarding the rest, I guess you have seen my posts in the "[INDIA] knobs, chassis, PCB makers" thread... all the rest of the stuff is easily available, at least for Gainclones. Some of the things that I couldn't find have been added by others, eg. good trimpots, Neutrik Speakons, etc. So, you can go ahead without even a group buy. Even PCBs are incredibly cheap (by Western standards). I can get a set of four Gainclone PCBs done with legend printing and solder masking for Rs.250 (with Rs.300 additional one-time cost for the films. That cost can be shared among all of us.)

I'll help in any way I can. What do you want to do?

Hi Tarun,
Think I may be able to help you with the films. Have a lith camera here which we use to make +ves for offset printing. No payment necessary; maybe instead you could send me 1 pcb. Let me know if you're interested.

You could email the original pcb layout in pdf, eps, illustator, coreldraw or in any vector format. Might take a bit of time now since our regular camera-operator is hospitalised. Has a drinking problem and is under deaddiction treatment. Should be discharged in about 2 weeks. Meanwhile we're training another guy.
Have a screen printing unit too, but that's used for invitation cards. Never tried pcb's.

I assume the price of 300/- the've quoted to you is just for regular +ves w/o pcb designing or any additional service. Its a little on the higher side. We usually charge 75/- for a 7"x7" minimum area. I'm sure the copper layer + solder mask +legend printing will remain within this area. Larger areas are charges at Rs. 1.30 per sq in.

--------------------------------------

Just wondering......why so much fuss about LM3886/3875?? Why not STK 4191 or similar. Its 50+50W , widely available, costs just 115/- (should be cheaper in lamington road or SP road) & readymade PCB's available. Am I missing something here???

Maybe the sound ?

Maybe be the simplicity and the sound !

It's pretty hard to beat the 3875 for parts count. It probably also sounds better. I can't vouch for that.I never built one (yet).
Cheers.

Lots of Questions?????

Hmm..

Looks like this LM3875 is gonna be hard to get.... I had ordered samples from the national semiconductors but they rejected my request or something, I think because I put my home address. Anybody in India got em for free?? It ships from the HongKong office. tough luck.

Ok shops to try? Amar Radio and Kothari Electronics (Mahendra could u guide me to Kothari, directions or a tel number or something, Lamington is huge and could get confused, RU sure of getting it there?). I think I will go asking generally every next shop.

Alternatives? LM3886 or that STK4191. I have an STK459 based PA which puts out 20 Wpc, it is quite bassy when coupled with a good preamp and large speakers. When driven hard you could fry an egg on it. :dead: So I guess STK4191 will be double the fun😀 what was the talk about getting readymade PCBs for the STK4191, Roshan. Next time I go to Lamington Road If I dont get a LM for less than 200 bucks, then I will go out and buy a TDA2*** kit from Visha or Vega to prevent headaches.

Could anyone suggest a suitable preamp for my STK459 PA. I have a shitty LA something which has bass/treble, bass is smooth, midrange is lacking and the treble sounds like a deckwala rickshaw with Jhankaar tweeters.... .:xeye: I heard of the philips preamps that are very common in Grant Road (completely built for Rs 300 something) anyone tried them, how are they.

What equalizers do you people use. I have seen 10+10 equals, fully boxed selling for 1000 bucks. What EQ should I go in for. I want something with low end grunt.

Finally, has anyone built a true GC? with which chip, please direct us lost souls .

We DIY r finding lot of problem in finding good components, mainly IC's & toshiba transistors. We can check & inform among us about who sales good stuff. or otherwise we can assure some one ( shopkeeper) for assured business from DIY so that he can stock & give us good stuff at reasonable prices. Also he can send by post parcel to all parts of India.
Kothari Electronics in Mumbai repairs multimeters. But his brother sales IC's but very expensive. Hence not recommended.

found at last

Phew !!!

Found the lm3886 on SP Road bangalore at last. One shop Rajdhani Electronics has ( or had 😉 ) the ICs. I picked up a pair at Rs145/- each. This shop also has 10,000uF Elna caps for Rs 120/- each which I am planning to pick up.

For us better fun now seems to be in hunting parts for amps rather than building or listening to them 🙂)

Thanks enormously for the offer. 🙂 And I can send you a PCB anyway whenever I make something for myself. 🙂

One advantage to getting the work done from M/s Image in Andheri here is that they have a Gerber photoplotter, with 1mil resolution. This means that I don't have to worry about scaling issues. When you try to make a PCB out of a PDF file, this scaling thing can be a real nightmare. I remember downloading PDF files for the Leach Low-TIM amp and finding that the size at which my Acrobat was printing his PDF was about 20% larger than it should be! 😕 With a Gerber photoplotter, I don't have to worry about that, and my Eagle software generates Gerber files without a problem.

Do you have a photoplotter?

I assume the price of 300/- the've quoted to you is just for regular +ves w/o pcb designing or any additional service. Its a little on the higher side. Actually, this chap has charged me Rs.300 for a set of four films for a small PCB (3.5" x 4" approx). This set of films includes (i) track-side copper, (ii) component side legend, (iii) solder mask, and (iv) solder mask in reverse.
... inclusive of silk-screen exposure and developing...
I don't exactly know what you mean here, but AFAIK, the silk screen comes in when PCBs are made out of the films. This chap (M/s Image) does not do anything with silk-screens. He just prints the Gerber files onto films using his photoplotter and gives those films to me, period. All the silk-screen messing around happens at the next workshop (Balaji Hertz Industries) where they make the PCBs from these films. Hope I am making sense... 😀

I got them. Some others here have, too. Give them your office address and try again, maybe with a different email address.

Try Pearl Electronics in one of the lanes off L.Road. There are two parallel lanes, Chunam Lane and Kiln Lane, off L.Road. If you stand in front of the Police Station on L.Road and look south, the Police Station will be on your right. Start walking along L.Road towards Opera House. The first lane to your right .... ignore it. Take the second lane to your right. (I don't remember whether it is called Kiln Lane or Chunam Lane.) Go down this lane for perhaps a hundred feet, and then keep looking on your left for Pearl Electronics. It's quite a small shop, with a glass door. Ask for these chips there. Last time I'd asked, they said LM3886 was available for Rs.350 or so. This is much higher than Mahendra's Pune figure or other figures from B'lore, but this is the only data point I have on L.Road.

Alternatives? LM3886 or that STK4191.
I believe the new NS Overture series are fundamentally much better sounding (low distortion, very low higher order distortion, etc) than the older chip amps like the OPA541 and what not. So I suggest you don't bother with the STK chips, just try hard to get the LM ones and do something with them.
What equalizers do you people use. I have seen 10+10 equals, fully boxed selling for 1000 bucks. What EQ should I go in for. I want something with low end grunt.
It is possible that these equalisers may not sound good enough to do justice to an Overture series amp. And I don't use any equaliser... I'm told they introduce serious phase distortions unless they are well made (i.e. their bandpass circuits are carefully designed).

Finally, has anyone built a true GC? with which chip, please direct us lost souls.
I'm in the process of putting final touches to my LM3875 PCB design. Roadkill of B'lore has built a stereo PCB with a preamp on-board. He's posted pictures on some other threads, just try searching for them.
