10"-12" Woofer for powerfull and punchy RockMusic

Hello

I’ve read a lot of posts, but unfortunately I haven’t found an answer that specifically addresses my goal.

I'm helping a friend build a 3- or 4-way speaker system primarily for rock music. I assume low bass isnt important if not used for synthetic or cinema movies..
My friend wants to experience, for example, the bass at the beginning of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" at nearly (not exactly) the original volume and impact. He own B&W 802 D3 with has in bass two 8" carbon woofer.
Unfortunately, this isn't really my area of expertise, as I normally design speakers for classical and jazz with activ-crossover.

I'm looking for a 10-12" woofer below 100Hz.
Not shure Closed or Bassreflex yet. Normaly i look for low RMS, reasonable high QMS, but i guess it is in this concept not (so) importent..? In this configuration, the bass should at least be run actively.

Midbass from ScanSpeak 18WU is already there. There are various tweeters and possibly midrange drivers available used from other projects or could be new ones, but I haven't decided on them yet. I am using VCad.

I might need to say that I have no experience with PA systems, and therefore I prefer to stay in the hi-fi segment based on my experience, at least when it comes to the tweeters and midrange drivers.

Physically, Vd can be used to estimate the potential loudness, but in my experience, it doesn’t say much about the actual bass quality.

The enclosure volume is flexible, with a maximum of 90 liters. Price isn't the main concern. Power Consumtion is also no concern.\

  1. punchy
  2. tight
  3. dynamic
  4. controlled
  5. articulate
  6. clean
  7. powerful
  8. precise

  • SB Acoustics 12″ SB34NRXL75-8
  • ScanSpeak Revelater 26W Alu
  • ScanSpeak 32W...may be with high Sensitiv?
  • i really would love to try the Vifa/Peerless Ne 265-315
  • PHL B30-4531
  • 26W Discovery
  • Beyma maybe..
  • Acoustic Elegance LO12-D8 ??
  • Faital 12RS430

Any additionally recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Jerome

Thank you for your input!
i made already a subwoower with two L26RO4Y in a symetrical Closed Box application , i guess 2 x 35l was it and it was not precise enough for me. If i do remember right it was just not tight enough. I then thought may i will build a linkwitz orion with these...but this is long time ago. I really was wondering how these would play OB. (Though, i never built any OB mainly for aestetic reason). But i have to say, because it was a seperate Supwoofer, i never did invest much time, because i normaly don't need subwoofer. I made this for a friend which didnt need it either, because his Standspeaker had enough bass at the end.. I still have this Subwoofer, made from very nice Walnut.

SB34NRXL75-8 is among the top 4.

i am really interested how a 32W/8878T11 Scanspeak high(er) Efficiency would work but probebly a bit waste of money or something like PHL..

Fwiw,
I’m no expert but currently listen to an active 2 way bookshelf system. I’ve become a huge fan of active systems. Hypex Fusion Amps are excellent. Are you familiar with Hypex Filter Design?
I’ve considered adding a bass driver to my existing 2 way. SB are at the top of the list and look to be a great value.
I’ll be following along…..
Best

How big is the listening room?
IMO this will require a 15" 3-way box at minimum built with a mix of pro audio components, the 15 needs to be a general purpose woofer(not a subwoofer), 6-8" cone mids and bullet tweeters. This will be a high sensitivity speaker.. 95-98dB, that is key to delivering the punch he is looking for, a reflex box with 45hz tuning will suffice. If the listening room is large consider making them dual 15's. My listening system in the '80's consisted of this type of build backed by a Sansui AU-D5 at first and later a Yamaha M85 power amp, no home audio system I have heard since comes anywhere close to delivering the effortless clarity and punch.

jes, actually its in my mind, but i dont want it to be true, or i thought maybe time changed with technology...but its probably physic and cant be cheated.. as i was young the most dynamic speakers where always pro PA Stuff. I know somebody since 35 years which repair Speakers(reconing etc.) and always it was pro PA that was highly impressiv regarding attack etc. This was almoast everytime with JBL Stuff 20 years ago.

But because of not my need regarding my genre or core concept i have lost the practise for that.

My longtime favorite Audax 210/170c0 (carbon) has such a nice dynamic, which i dont need more normaly for my application, very precise for kickdrum or snare drum, but of course power scaling is way off, what needed here. And everytime (only few) i tried to scale with hifi stuff i was disappointed and gave it up..it was just not enough importent to me..

You are looking for a typical JBL style woofer, like used in their big speakers like the 4367 and precestors. If you can't find a good JBL i would look for speakers that are similar, not for more modern drivers with harder cones. JBL used fiber (mostly paper) cones, big magnets and limited xmax (not subwoofer like) to get decent lower mids also. Of your list, the faital is closed to that. But i would also take a 15" like the Faital 15BR400, and a big cabinet for it, not a slim tower.

Use 3 diy subs with 4x 30w Discovery and 1x 32w Revelator Scan Speak drivers, with Hypex plate amps 2000w@4ohm
They sound amazing, high vas and low moving mass drivers are the best for music in my opinion.
Thanks for your Input. I dont want seperate Subs. And dont understand your concept. And for me, why should i use 5 drivers? Do you mean or use the 30W as Midbass? If not this would mean 5 Subs....Groupdelay/Transient ? But then 2 32W Rev the ones with 14mm has more or less enough VD. A 18WU has plenty of upper bass. But still i am not concinced they do punching as what i am looking for. Anyway i have only place for max. one 12" per side. Remember i am for a 3 or 4 Way Standspeaker

I really would like a 15" but for the moment it is not applicable....unfortunetly...

@Chord: yes i always thought i should try this Audax Woofer...looks interesting. I But max spl is probably limited. But actually i like foam suround! Do you have firsthand expirience with this driver?
I don't have experience with the Audax pr240m0, but i've, last time the HT240A0 and i have listen for a long time the PR380M0 and asimilate old Audax, they are very good loudspeaker.
