Hi Everyone.
I have my neighbours's 100 series Partybox make it's bass heard over on my side with a 2.5m tall concrete wall.
Even at lower volumes and no matter where it's placed, i can still hear the damn thumping bass.
Now, my backyard is closed on 2 sides with the said wall and my house, the other sides are open to the "pasture".
I had built some 20 years ago 2 ported boxxes (maybe tuned to 50-60Hz, don't remember) with PAudio G1250 or G1251 (12" speakers 97db @ 1W) since they were cheap and had high SPL.
Very low xmax was no problem as they were used for only voice and that would never exceed xmax.
And they worked wonders for the vocal choir (no instruments) on the outside of the church they were installed.
After, they passed to a buddy of mine that used them the same way and also for some exterior parties, and he was really pleased by the sound, bass included.
So, after remembering these still exist, i brought them to my backyard and they were loud overall but not much bass unless sitting right next to them.
I've tried an additional room sub and car sub, and they did improve the bass but only when sitting between them or max 1m away.
In those places, bass was sufficient.
But anywhere else, almost no bass.
Now, i know inside you can use use the room gain to your advantage while outside that's not available, that's why I placed them close to the house wall so i could get some wall gain.
Anyone has any idea what's wrong with my backyard acoustics and how the heck does that partybox with 2 x 6.5" speakers have that kick?
Maybe i placed them wrong ?
Any help is appreciated.

Maybe you could use a couple sheets of plywood to make a corner to stick the sub(s) in. And make sure you’re sitting in the hot zone. The only real fix is to take those two sheets of plywood and make a pair of SS15 or similar. You don’t need crazy SPL, just more than store-bought some home theater sub is going to make. My guess is you’d be satisfied with SS15’s loaded with $150 drivers, and hit with 400 watts. Something practical, and more than the same money buys from a music store. Not going to be enough to win a neighborhood SPL war, but enough to bring the cops if you have a curmudgeon living nearby.
Is the 2.5m tall wall and house wall opposite to each other? If yes, what is the distance between the 2 walls? Now, my backyard is closed on 2 sides with the said wall and my house, the other sides are open to the "pasture".
Hey, look, it might be a tiny bit that, maybe like 5%.Neighborhood SPL war?
But honestly, lacking the financial desire to invest >$500 in a Partybox that will be used twice a year for couple of hours, i'm wondering how come.
How come that damn small partybox, and i know it has good bass speakers (but small) + dsp-magic, is so much better in the bass area than big 'ole large PA speakers. It has ample volume and crazy dispersion while i'm having nothing.
I mean, i know i'm dumb about these things, and therefore maybe i'm doing something wrong in my setup.
But how could i kow if i'm doing it wrong ?
And hitting my 12" PA speakers with 10W each is waaay too loud for what we want, but that's in the midrange. So, no need for hundreads of W.
Incidentally, i did my test when neighbors had they're thing on low volume and my system was at 2x10W.
You could only hear the midrange from me and the bass from over the fence. Weird experience.
So i'm killing it in the midrange and taking a beating in the lowrange.
And what would that be ? The entire backyard ? Or just the center ?And make sure you’re sitting in the hot zone
I mean, since the backyard is pretty much open, sound should be the same in all directions and it is, but lacks bass except very close and between speakers.
Nope, the wall and house forn an L.Is the 2.5m tall wall and house wall opposite to each other? If yes, what is the distance between the 2 walls?
House is ~11m and wall ~20m long.
Speaker cabinets against house, wall on the right, front and left open field.
PS
My youngest has the birthday this weekend and the oldest 2 weeks after that and she keeps twisting the knife in the wound:
"You said you bring big speakers but these thing are crap, there's no bass ... I'm outa here"
I agree but that does not mean NO low freq extension.Nothing wrong with your PAudio G1251 - they are just not designed for low frequency extension.
From what i can remember, they can do 60Hz, maybe even 50Hz.
And i can hear / feel that but only upclose.
Why is it dropping the SPL that much after 1m ?
And also, if i add an external sub, the same happens just that the bass is a little deeper and stronger ?
What am i doing wrong ?
I mean, acoustics is hard, but THIS hard ?
You’re just getting an education of how much sub you really need outdoors. REAL bass takes four 16 cubic foot cabs with top of the line 18’s in them, and 10,000 or more watts. But you can probably find some middle ground - just not from some consumer item that came from a store. They’re just not enough. 90 dB at point blank range, dropping off -6dB per doubling of distance doesn’t take long to get to inaudible below 100 Hz.
Yes, it mean exactly that. It is not clear to me - did you borrow or not neighbors' JBL Partybox 100 to try it in your backyard? If not, do borrow it... and witness no bass at all. Open space is the hardest possible acoustics - you need massive amount of subwoofers.I agree but that does not mean NO low freq extension.

Neighbor of mine bought Bose pro linearays with some small boxes 8" subs, that kicks SPL, a lot of it. High extrusion specialist drivers helped by DSP. Does not mean it is good quality, but not too bad neither. I'm OK as I like neighbor and we share music taste.
It would be useful if you post your compete setup, driver spec, box layout and how you drive it.. Like this we readers are blind.

The Partybox belongs to the neighbors. It cannot be borrowed.
It is always placed outside, i have never heard it inside.
So all that i mentioned is for OUTSIDE conditions.
It has been placed all over my neighbours backyard and it always had bass no matter the positioning, with good propagation even at low volumes.
I know because i have seen and heard it on many occasions.
I have also heard other partyboxes in other places at different times.
They behaved just about the same.
I don't want high SPL, don't need 90db, 80db would be enough. Just have some bass ...
Right now, even with subwoofers i can't get even close to the partybox.
So, for low-ish SPL, a trashcan sized 2 x 6.5" partybox, playing OUTSIDE, has the same bass output as a gigawatt of horn loaded or line array-ed 18's ?
Really ?

Ok, so doing some eq-ing to cut below 50 and boost from 50 to 120 or maybe a little more.
Does positioning outside matters ?
As in maybe bad spots that cancels bass due to phase or something ?

High pass at 50Hz and classic "JBL tilt" (ca 7dB downwards tilt from around 100Hz up to 10kHz) should get you a relatively good result. Do you have any kind of microphone? It helps to measure the speakers so you know what you should aim for with the adjustments.80db would be enough. Just have some bass ...
Depends on how box is build, i.e. the tuning frequency. I strongly suggest 60 Hz tuning frequency (modify ports, if necessary), with max boost at 60 Hz and little less above - up to 250-350 Hz. Steep cut below 55 Hz is beneficial.Ok, so doing some eq-ing to cut below 50 and boost from 50 to 120 or maybe a little more.
Put both boxes (one over other) tightly in the corner between wall and house.Does positioning outside matters ?
