From BoxSim to VituixCAD for absolute beginners

Hi all,

i have tried some years ago the switch from BoxSim to VituixCAD but i have massive understanding problems with that, my impression is that i am getting too old for the learning curve of it.

Here the comment of another thread member, probably younger and less stupid than me:

maybe one of the VituixCAD experts can take a look at BoxSim and add here some comments how to switch from BoxSim to VituixCAD for dummies

there are a lot of DIY folks in Europe that are still using BoxSim, but the import of foreign data is difficult and limited to on axis measurements, Visaton started the development of the program many years ago as incentive to buy Visaton instead of other brands and posted the serious measurement with on axis and off axis data in 5 degree steps only for their own drive units

if you look at the new Purifi tweeter you can see that even in the industry VituixCAD is getting more and more relevant, i wonder when the big players like Seas and Scan Speak will start to offer the measurement data in 5 degree steps to import in VituixCAD

many thanks in advance for your help, Stefano

I use both. I do not think you could 'switch' from one to another; the only way I see is that you forget how Boxsim works and learn VituixCAD from the ground up.

Some comments:
  • Restore VituixCAD to the default settings (Help --> Clean user.config). Now if you do not understand a setting, its value most likely is OK and you can skip over it.
  • At tab 'Room', uncheck all reflections. At this point you do not need this feature.
  • Like Boxsim, the software requires one or more drivers and a crossover. There is also a 'Tools' menu.
  • To define a driver, you need measurements. There are some steps required (merge and/or add baffle diffraction) before you can use these to define a driver. This is somewhat complicated and only a manual or video tutorial can explain it.
  • Do not be afraid to mash buttons you do not know and see what happens. There is no need to read the (long!) manual and then use the software, just start using it take a look at the manual when something is unclear.
  • The easiest way to learn software is have someone show it to you. Maybe you can attend a DIY event.

I think it is available, but the manufacturers simply choose not to publish it. They do not publish Klippel reports to consumereither.

The issue here is that measurements on a standardized baffle are mostly useless if your speaker has a different shape. And while VituixCad offers a (simplified) diffraction simulation I am not sure it can be precise enough to justify 5° measurement steps.

If I am not mistaken Boxsim just uses a flat piston diaphragm model to simulate directivity.

Hi @TBTL !

Many thanks for the first input, i have to try to follow your suggestions.

So the first step will be to start with some old project rusting in the cupboard and to start to take measurements with my CLIO Pocket measurement equipment

i will try to take some screenshots and to post them here, may be useful for other beginners.

Many thanks again, Stefano

Hi @stv , appreciate your feedback.

BoxSim introduced a new drive unit measurement format a couple of yearss ago, where they replaced the piston model with a set of measurements from 0 to +/- 90 degree with 5 degree steps, but only for their own drive units

hope it helps, Stefano
