Who can remember stereo chains from the 1990s?

That's a myth. Founders E (Eugene) and J (Joe) were WWII veterans, and intended to destroy competitors like the Corvette ship destroyed enemies. The company was founded and named years before the US became involved in Korea.

Oops, you're exactly right. With delight I will inform my spouse. The Digital Library of Illinois confirms your explanation (link) as displayed below. E. J. Korvette founded 1948, Korean war years were 1950-53.

It used to be in the old days that you could bring your own high-quality CD in the stores and they would play it for you in a good quality CD player so you could properly audition the rest of the system - amp, speakers, etc.

But not anymore. The last time I tried to do that I was told that they no longer had a CD player available to use for listening purposes. However, you were welcome to find some MP3 file on the Internet that you could use to audition any components that you wanted to buy. I told the guy that would be a complete waste of time, but I don't think he actually understood the difference.

I bought a pair of AR-4x speakers at the St. Louis EJ Korvette back in high school, they somehow lasted 4 years of undergrad college. EJ Korvette had a very good, well stocked audio department, arranged in its own rather large room.

But our local Best Buy now has a much better audio shop, with several acoustically isolated listening rooms and some decent equipment, even tube amplifiers and good turntables. Hard to believe.

Gary’s Stereo Video, Richmond, Virginia. Old school audio salon. My first job, I worked there from 1988 to 1993 as a salesman. We sold Nakamichi, KEF, Denon, Klipsch, Polk. Surround sound was coming on the scene and CD players were cutting edge. What a glorious time.
