We went on a Sunday morning. There wasn't really a crowd at all. Half the time we were the only ones in the room. The other half there was maybe another couple people in a room. I heard it was a lot busier on Saturday. How was the show overall? Did it seem well-attended, i.e., were the rooms full most of the time? How was the marketplace?
Tom
If you're anywhere close it really is a fun thing to go see. Just back to back to back listening for a whole day.
I really cannot even guess as I know little about DSP designed speakers. I am very glad we went and listened to all of those designed as I have been considering going active for the last year or so. After that experience, I will be sticking to passives. I'm telling you though, it was dead clear which had dsp and which were passive. One can only speculate as to the reasons behind it. As long as the signal chain is solid, I guess it boils down to how they used it. Some lucky guesses:
- All active filters; no passive components to shape the output impedance to be optimal across the different frequency ranges. That would be consistent with woofers becoming harsh near their break-up modes.
- Single-brand amplifier racks? Seeing all the shiny gold and silver boxes on shiny chrome stands, I assume there was very little mixing and matching of amplifiers for each speaker 'way'.
- Steep filter slopes to mitigate #1, while probably making the dispersion lumpy. @perrymarshall had a thread describing an effect, where (correctly phased) sound pressure from adjacent woofers had a wave-guide like effect that alters mid/tweeter dispersion. Now, what happens if each driver is EQ'd in isolation so the virtual wave guides disappear? Variations of this come to mind, where sophisticated attempts to use biquads or FIR filters overlook these driver interactions.
Thats the type of winner I want to see.It makes no sense to me about the fit and finish, other than if maybe PE wants pretty pictures of the winning speakers for their advertising, and mailings, etc.
Can you imagine if a primer only MDF speaker placed first???
I come from the world of race cars. Race cars and not pretty. They are loud, have crappy paint jobs, and held together with rivets and tie wraps, and the entire thing is basically a blemish. Run this against a gorgeous ferrari..... it will run circles around it. I'm all about performance, not looks.
Yeah, he was there. We told him how impressed we were. These were so incredible. I will be making a full range folded voiht. I will probably mess it all up but if I get anywhere close, I will be a happy man.Pearl Acoustics Sibelius ("the gentleman" 😎) but at Montreal 2025, sound demo

My comment at 4K / AAC 192kbps video YT: Very good sound!!!
This makes a lot of sense. Designing a speaker to deliver the dynamics necessary for the sort of music car audio like is much harder than it is to play the "boring old man music" everyone else was playing. You really don't need that great of speakers to play one guy slowly strumming a guitar. We are into personal opinion here but I would have loved to hear what some of the speakers could do pumping out Mr Kitty, Hippie Sabotage, or RITUALThis is my friend's design. He's also known for setting SPL world records and having the best sound quality car audio competition systems ever. Steve Cook has a great ear. His "tunes" tend to be a bit more on the 'aggressive' side (2kHz bump, tons of bass output) but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just the way the system is balanced. It has dynamics for days. I agree it was one of the better systems at the show. But maybe I'm biased.
I recently learned hornresp. I am going to rock out a design around the Alpairs. These units sold me on the folded horn design.I've had someone suggest these are Pearl Audio's Sibelius loudspeakers in the photo here. When I look up those speakers, they look identical. Hmmm. Seeing the price on the Sibelius would confirm what my ears were hearing. I want to build around the Alpair 11s.
You want to collaborate?
He had all kinds of speakers there. The walls were literally lined with all sorts of different models. I do believe this guy has tried just about everything. This guy is definitely a master at his trade. These are new, prototypes? Nowhere in sight on their website.
Did they have the smaller units on display? The Powerpoint 10? I've seen them on sale often, must be the boring looks, but they have a good chance at sounding good given they were done by Phil Jones.
The forza. She liked the Forzas. They were very natural and dynamic. They had the show and the go. Full package. I'm sure the price would make me realize how poor I am (I am not poor but nor can I afford speakers at this price point)Probaly Estelon extreme or forza ?
Look up Mr Andrew Jones sometiime.
He has worked for ELAC, KEF, Pioneer/TAD, and now primarily for MoFi. He knows his stuff.

I'm pretty sure Javad has measurements of the speakers he designed for ScanSpeak in his Facebook group.I see a lot of opinions--but no measurements (on-axis or better yet--polar sonograms) for even the DIY configurations.
Also after reading @bikinpunk's post I realize I heard the Master Artist speakers lauded by the OP as "Endgame speakers. The BEST of the BEST." For about 2-3 seconds. I walked in, heard the dull treble one gets from standing and listening to ribbon tweeters mounted at seated height, and walked out. IMO a speaker should sound good when standing as well as when seated, so definitely not "endgame" for me. Others are fine with that restriction, of course.
I think that's three of us not including my buddy and my wife. I really did want to hear Magico but they had already packed up for the day. Seemed pretty big to me but I have nothing to relate it to.I've attended every AXPONA for the last 14 years including when they were at the Westin by O'Hare. This year was so disappointing, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought my system at home was better than 95% of the rooms. How can B&W make 800 diamond series speakers sound so bad? I also thought the number of rooms and exhibitors was down by a third.
@Porsche - That's good to hear. I was thinking to go and show off my Neurochrome wares, but didn't have a plan and didn't want to take the plunge without some sort of marketing strategy and materials available.
I went last year to show off my TCA wares, and found it pretty dead. The shared areas (I was in the Ear Gear) were also poorly organized. Part of the vendor next to me's display was spilling into my area and such.

I got two pairs of Elacs he made... trust me, the man knows how to make commercial speakers that sound good and provide a lot of bang for the money.
Also, no discussion here of the actual DIY news from the show?
SB Acoustics is (usual lead times + tariffs permitting) launching 5" and 6" coaxes using their anodized aluminum cones with corrugated surrounds. Allegedly 4 month out. They were in the Madisound room. They also had an SB Acoustics 8" pro coax on display, though I don't know if that's a shipping product.

hmm, all quality speakers IMO have a sweet spot, the money spot IMO, to each there own but walking around and listening to music is not really critical listening or what a quality speaker should be based on, but again, to each there own, an not really fair to compare for a 2-3 sec demo, but again, just my opinion, thanks for the viewpointI'm pretty sure Javad has measurements of the speakers he designed for ScanSpeak in his Facebook group.

Oh, he makes the elacs? No wonder they are so highly regarded.I got two pairs of Elacs he made... trust me, the man knows how to make commercial speakers that sound good and provide a lot of bang for the money.
I would pay that man just for an hour of his time to look at my designs and tell me what I am doing wrong. I would pay good money for that.
I didn't, we moved on very quickly from the speakers that sounded bad.OTOH, if you instantly hear something that you know is a problem for you, why spend more of your limited time with it?
Agree with a lot that was said. The Morels were outstanding. Every Dynaudio was great. Surprised the Linkwitz was blah. Lithuanian loudspeaker brand Audio Solutions was great, used all SB Acoustics drivers.
Really impressed with the Pearl Sibelius Alpair unit, made of solid French Oak. Scaled perfectly. Punched. A little weak in the treble., missed that sparkle. Surprising how dynamic they got, but need a smaller room.
