As in "technically sound / technically sophisticated". Must include measurements, at the very least frequency response, harmonic distortion, and radiation pattern - that's the very least we need to know to judge.
I'm curious, but don't feel like browsing hundreds of pages to find out. Feel free linking to build reports that you think qualify. Maybe this thread can even turn into a nice public collection.

Joe's 'Elsinore':
Thought it best to consolidate the inquiries re the Elsinore Project into a single thread, so issues can be dealt here.

I would put my stand mount Monoculus coax plus woofer 3ways in that camp. I've had a great many compliments on them. They slice and dice the music and present a large portion on the plate in front of you.
They are 15 ltrs, and perform and measure very well. I feel I prefer them to the KEF equivalents.

I was referred to Tang Band through a friend in the business, and the president of the company sent me a pair of the W4-2315 4.5" coincident drive units. I recently completed them, showed them at PE's 2023 Speaker Design Competition, and have been thoroughly pleased with the results. These are not yet available on North American soil to my knowledge, and these units are fairly new. The off axis plots they sent me were taken Jan 4, 2023.

This is a long thread with many twists and dead ends. Before diving in, take a look a this first:

Following up on the earlier Open Source Speaker thread (part I and part II) I am starting a new thread to discuss the develpment of the "Open Source Monkey Coffin".
Here's an...
- The documentation files of the finished Open Source Monkey Coffin loudspeaker. I am (trying to) keep this up to date!
- The notes at the end of this post, which have some useful hints to navigate the thread.

Anyone ever consider doing a Orangutan clone?
What drivers would you use?
Looks like the SEAS 10", but that only states as 89db.
The Orangutans are 93 & 96 db
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Mike

This is a series of speakers, all based on the same principle designed tested and very detailed documented by xrk971:
10F/8424 & RS225-8 FAST / WAW Ref Monitor
some pictures of two variations of it from that tread, all made by XRK971

After dipoles it seems waveguides are the new craze. In spite of all the differences between the two, the concepts share a focus on controlling directivity – which was also the main criterion in the design of my Unbaffled Dipole. Therefore, for me it wasn’t much of a stretch to design a speaker with a waveguide.
The concept is a 2-way speaker with a 12” woofer and a 1" compression driver with a 12” waveguide, crossed passively at 1 khz. A miniDSP is used for amplitude corrections and the crossover to subwoofers below about 100 hz.
I considered many drivers, but I ultimately...

@hifijim's very well documented projects:
terra incognita (passive x-over 3way)
Compact low cost active 3-way
Purifi+WG
(And there are even more ...)
and of course:
@wesayso's line arrays

Yes, @wesayso must be on any list of impressive DIY speaker projects.
I also like this project from @PKAudio New project: Bliesma T34B in WG, 18WE, 32W
And this project from @IamJF What's possible with a modern 3" Midrange ... 3way Prototype
There have been a couple of MEH (multiple entry horn) designs that have turned out well. MEH is hard to get right, so when they turn out well, it is impressive. I don't have a link, perhaps some one could add one?

Rockport (Avior2) styled 3way speaker DIY - finally completed.!
I love rockport technology speakers, both sound and style.
So I decided to make it by myself.
tweeter : scanspeak 6640
mid : audiotechnology 15H
Woofer : audiotechnology 23I * 2

Don't limit yourself. Some people, even some of the best minds may be on a continuous journey. The idea to detail construction may not be conducive. Besides, it may be assumed that their example is help enough, especially to people who are already on a similar path. Not all, but at least a good part of them are documented well.
Sometimes they are so good, but don't get the attention they deserve!
I like @Ardacer LX521 upgrade - https://www.diyaudio.com/community/...range-dipole-design-free.390712/#post-7873079
With his permission, is there a way it can be moved to Multi-way?

Interesting that it isn't. If Ardacer feels it should or shouldn't be in Planars & Exotics I'm willing to listen.
Technically sound, technically sophisticated.what are you attempting to describe. As we know some of the best sounding speakers may not be sophisticated.eg single full range drivers on a flat baffle.can of worms . One mans gold anothers poison. Who is to say what is deamed as a technical sound.
hummmmm ! 😒
Cabinet shape as its material & design is a plain part of the whole design & sound.
Beolabs, Wilson Audio (ugly & f...g mauvais gout, but that's not the illustration here), Vivid audio, Kef Blade, Estelon, Magico, Avalon or even a simple D&D developped here with clever layout and DSP), etc !
Mancraft skill is not easy for most, I admire what people are making here to clone that, and I surmise it is not just for the looking side only. It is well talked here since a decade at least. It is great help. I wisch we had more video and skill inputs on the cabinets.
So I will add : Augerpro's study on cabinets. Great !

The Purifi-waveguide project has high performance, and I don't object to it being on this list. Thanks for linking @stv !@hifijim's very well documented projects:
terra incognita (passive x-over 3way)
Compact low cost active 3-way
Purifi+WG
The other two I would not classify as high performance. The LCCAM was designed to be a low cost active 3-way of modest size, easy to build, with acceptable (but not excellent) levels of distortion, enough SPL capability for a mid sized room. The Terra Incognita was an excuse for me to design a passive radiator system, and to try a passive 3-way crossover. It is a good sounding speaker, and it made a fine gift to my friend, but it has some faults. These two projects are well documented, but I would not include them on a list of "Best / most impressive DIY speaker builds on DIYAudio"
j.
me neither, speaker building is all about compromises because of the physics involved.
And I guess audio projects all try to achieve even frequency response but all project try to achieve this a bit differently and with different trade offs, limitations etc.. So what’s best for your listening situation is never what’s best universally, unless we would all have the same listening situations.

I'm impressed by the result of the mechano23 with so cheep drivers. Of course the result is something but having developed a new tool to achieve this is just brillant...
