I wasn't sure where to post this so apologies if it's in the wrong place.
I don't know much about what's available, brands or prices etc..
I'm in the UK and Amazon are selling a trio of JJ ecc83 valves for £50 ($64 ish for our American friends).
Is this about the best I can get for fifty quid and no more!
It's a trio I need btw, and I'll be looking at replacing the rest of the valves in the amp at a later date.
PP EL84 amp btw.

This is about the price a reputable German tube vendor sells J/J E83CC for. No need t buy from Amazon at all.
Best regards!

I don't know which vendor you're talking about I'm afraid. Do they offer free shipping to the UK? This is why I selected Amazon. This is about the price a reputable German tube vendor sells J/J E83CC for. No need t buy from Amazon at all.
I'll happily buy elsewhere, I just don't know where.
Rik.
Sorry that the URL link didn't work. It's www.btb-electronic.de. Anyway, they don't offer free shipping...

By NOS from someone in the UK who does proper testing or EBay, take your time and find those good deals on a matched trio (only if necessary). If you are patient, you can find very good deals. Again, take your time. I buy lots of very good tubes on eBay by waiting for the right deal. Sort your tube search by location.
Someone will come in this thread and flame me but I stand by eBay for NOS tubes if you do some research: I’ve had really good purchases from all over the world via the net and eBay.
Learn something about testing and then you will understand what vendors are offering.
Fortunately, in the US we have a few very good large and small NOS vendors who are quite affordable. You will have those in the UK as well. Seek them out and and the same time don’t be afraid of buying from abroad.
Cheers,
Greg

Thanks. But what a mine field.
There's 339 ecc83 valves there. It's hard to pick when you're not sure what you're looking for...
Hi.. . . . I don't know much about what's available, brands or prices etc..
I'm in the UK and Amazon . . . .
Unfortunately less than decent experiences with JJ tubes.
The sample quality is very varied.
Sometimes good, and many times noisy, distortive, etc.
Try to find a reputable seller, the best ECCxx I've found were the NOS Tungsram from Europe.
Excellent electrical parameters and superb sound.
you can still find them.
What's the amp, and what are the tubes in it now?PP EL84 amp btw.

I thought your choice was based on cost and you can get three ECC83 from Watford Valves for under £50.
P.S. It is not 339 valves, it's around 54. The listing includes valve kits for specific amplifiers.

The valves all appear to be stock and are stamped "CVC Chelmer"
I want to change them as I don't know their history.
2 of the 3 12AX7's flare up on power up.
I'm not necessarily concerned about the flare, but I am concerned that only 2 of the 3 do it...
That's a classic Mullard characteristic. The cold cathode glows real bright for a second on start-up. Nothing to be concerned about. Unless they get noisy, I would just leave them alone.2 of the 3 12AX7's flare up on power up.

No idea who "CVC Chelmer" is, most likely just a rebrander.

It'ss not the cathode. It's a tiny piece of the tungsten heater that isn't coated with isolation.

The Chelmer Valve Co Ltd was established in 1961, initially specialising in audio vacuum tubes and transmitter valves.

Yes, meant to say heater. Only on my first cup of coffee. 😉It's a tiny piece of the tungsten heater that isn't coated with isolation.
