Anybody experienced with this transformer from eBay?

Looking at the print out on the transformer, I can't figure out what is SCR (Yellow-Green)?
Is Green EARTH GROUND? What is SCR? And I don't see Yellow. I'd like to know the connections before I buy.
Thanks for your input.

The yellow/green striped wire is the screen (SCR) and is the one at the extreme top right in your picture.

This wire connects to a copper safety screen between the primary and secondary windings and would normally be connected to ground.

Only one Blue wire...so use Black-Blue for 0-14?
Black-Green should be 0-5V, and Black-Brown should be 6.3V
Orange-Black-Orange is 280-0-280, so probably a tube amp transformer, two sets of secondary windings are expected.

It is made in China, I am not happy about the same secondary center point used for low and high voltage windings.

Look for alternates, does not state if vacuum impregnated winding, and I did not check the warranty.
And check the landed cost at your address, shipment can be more than part cost these days.

$50 + $35 shipping. Any warranty would be useless since it is shipped from China. I couldn't find any single transformer on Mouser that has 3 secondary voltages: 1 for B+, 1 for filament (6.3V) and 1 for soft-start circuit.

You could use 2 transformers...might be cheaper in fact.

And my objection may be wrong, I do not work on tube amps, please see what the tube enthusiast members here are doing in their power supplies, what kind of transformers they use, that should help.

I use all ANTEK (AS-4442's for big amps) .... 42-0-42 + 15-0-15 for chips. They don't even "sweat" with my 400W HYPEX sub amp.
I use ANTEK AS-0520's for any line stage/headphone amps , or my hobby supplies (breadboard PS).

WAY BETTER quality than any China Ebay stuff (they sell on ebay , as well).
I just ordered from them , just 24 hours to NY - UPS !

Oh , I forgot to mention ... Shop on ANTEK's ebay store , they have discontinued and overstock items.
I bought BOTH of my brute 4442's for 65$ , they don't wind them anymore.
Overstock 0520's and 0518's (12$ each) , I bought 6 of em'.

Antek’s are still Chinese made. Not sure who their contract manufacturer is, but it’s got to be one of the big boys who make most of the pro audio stuff. It’s of similar quality. The distribution center here sure as hell saves on shipping charges because they get big bulk shipments just a few times a year. A slow boat from China is cheap. Air freight, not so much. If something is out of stock, you may have to wait a few months for a shipment to come in. But one time in particular they have pulled units out of new pre made DC supplies to fill my order. I wanted some of the big ones ($1000+ order) and I guess their shipment was scheduled too far out and didn’t want to lose the business.

buy usa !!
Yeah. But guaranteed not made in the USA.

I've used Antek transformers in many builds - both tube and solid state. I'd recommend them if you're looking for a cheap transformer. For something of higher quality, I recommend Toroidy in Poland. But you'll find that the cost of a Toroidy transformer is probably 2-2.5x the cost of the equivalent Antek, plus shipping. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

The Anteks are as good as the one in the amp you buy in a store. Or musician’s outlet. The only difference is you get the choice to buy the next size (or two) up from the one they used. Most low volume custom shops can make better, but not 2to 5X the cost better. At least not for most builds. If cost is no object and you need every ounce of quality, look elsewhere and pay.

I’m just used to using donor cores for pennies on the dollar, with high enough VA but too low a voltage, stripping the useless secondary(ies), putting on $20-50 worth of magnet wire and tape, and getting things that otherwise would have cost $400-500. Antek is a nice happy medium. It will be a sad day when they exit this sector of the market and go the way of Plitron. Back to scouring the planet for cores.

The Anteks are as good as the one in the amp you buy in a store.
That may be, but they're still not at the quality level of Toroidy, Hammond, Plitron, et al. In particular the secondary is often wound with significant gaps between windings. That'll make for a larger leakage field. They're often also 'lumpy' which makes it harder to get them mounted securely in the chassis.

But they're also not at the price point of the Toroidy, Hammond, Plitron, etc. For those in the US who benefit from low USPS Priority shipping rates, the Antek certainly provides good value for the money. Those of us outside the US who get fleeced on the shipping cost can find better value elsewhere.

I looked at https://sklep.toroidy.pl/en_US/c/Toroidal-transformers-STANDARD-GRADE/20/1/default/1/f_ov_21_283/1

No 2 X 115V primaries ? Except for tube trafos's?
Standard 400VA's are about the same price as Antek AS-4445.
"audio grades" are nice but crazy priced.
Yes , Anteks are "bumpy". Add another piece of rubber gasket to it.
  • but , they do not buzz.
  • couple percent more loss is worth the shipping and USA discount.
  • VERY low voltage drop with load (AS-4442 is still above 40V @10A).
  • Verbose PDF of trafo specs - good website.

"made in china" ... who cares .
I would not have my bigger amps , as I bought 2 AS-4442's for 65$ plus 12$ shipping.
can't AFFORD Toroidy !
Antek has other good $hit , too. (below). Anybody heard of "ASKA" caps ?
They test good. Real 60K uF and 80V , super low ESR = 39$ !!
Running +/- 57V with 10R across outputs (5.7A).

Many today use cheap chinese SMPS
Many a Chinese tube preamp use SMPS for both the filament and B+ .
Goes along with the Chinese ECC82 "gold lion" tube , add some "good cheers" and "banggood"
capacitors for real good audio !
