Hi all,
I'm new to speaker building (although I've built multiple amps and preamps) and picked up two Faital Pro 12FH500 4 ohm woofers for a very low price. I'd like to build a two way speaker out of these and need a recommendation on the tweeter and ideal crossover point. Should I try one of the Faital compression horn drivers? Does it matter they are 8 ohm?
Thanks!
Brad

1khz to 1.2khz.…..a 12 starts to narrow and beam around 1k. Faital CDs are some of the best in the game.
To mate a 12" comfortably about 1kHz, HF146R from Faital's lineup for example, if you can stretch the budget and if you want good sound for domestic use.

If you're considering the Faital Pro HF10AK or HF1440, either would pair well with your 12FH500. Set your crossover between 1.2 kHz and 2 kHz.
Depending on where you buy them (price), Faital HF108 1", sold for 110£ ish each, several places.Anyone have any specific tweeters they strongly recommend under $200 each?
Goes comfortably low enough to mate with the 12fh500.
Performs well and handles a 1khz xo just fine, for domestic applications.
One of the better performing 1" drivers, that handles the low xo, and does not have any objectionable qualities.
Other excellent options for a fair price, (assuming domestic levels) :
B&C DE360
BMS 5530
JBL 2408H-1 (not as cheap as the above ones)
JBL 2409H
18S ND1090, (too high price?)

So here’s the thing Elias……your woofer choice dictates the crossover point in this use case since you have a budget in mind. A 12” woofer should not be used above 1.2khz or so as this is the point where the woofer becomes directional or beams…..and that gets worse the higher you go.Anyone have any specific tweeters they strongly recommend under $200 each?
Now the rest comes down to how loud you want these to go and how much you have to spend. Asking a 1” compression driver to play down to 1khz isn’t that big of an ask UNLESS you plan on professional use levels. In that case, be prepared to spend quite a bit. In the $200 per driver range, there’s plenty to choose from that will get loud enough in your case to chase folks out of a room but you won’t be putting the band back together.
Now with a crossover point in mind, you need to select the horn lens…..this is the most important choice as the horn dictates the frequency response and dispersion pattern or how the tweeter will fill the room…….wide horizontal?……vertical?….thats up to you To decide depending on where these will be placed in your room.
The horn will

First of all, I love this site. So much great information from all of you. Thank you!
One last question: someone locally is selling two Altec 811b horns and two 806 drivers with new diaphragms from GPA. Anyone have experience with those or a view on whether they would be a good match? They are asking $500 for the set and offered to throw in N800F crossovers if I want them for $50.
Thanks again.
