It would be interesting to measure the signal amplitude in HF test point (playing some commercial CD, not self burnt one). Unfortunately the service manual does not provide a reference value.
You need a scope for that though.
The CD load sequence is fine but I have difficulty getting it to display TOC. On the rare occasions it did, pressing play hangs up the player.
I tried to get the disc table height as accurately as I can, to no avail. I tried the rf focus too without luck.

Probably yes but you should still measure the HF testpoint signal amplitude - it could give some sort of indication.
