Do you mean something like that? Equalizing phases/delays in different paths takes quite a bit of room. Putting 4 drivers instead of a monster like this one may be more practical.
Fair enough. Perhaps the term should be increase dispersion. The word improve typically means to reduce (make narrow) or to make smooth.the idea of pinching the sides to improve horizontal dispersion.

Well, I agree improve is open to interpretation. I meant to say that I'd like a 4" driver to have the horizontal dispersion of a 1" tweeter, eliminating the need for a line array composed of arrays of tweeter and mids.

If you are asking me, absolutely not!! 😱
The reason I so liked the JBL wave guide approach was the near zero depth. It's apparently just a sheet of plastic, far less than 1" thick. If that's all it takes to make a line source, or even an ESL to have the horizontal dispersion of a 1" tweeter it seems like a bargain.
I think this is kind of the free lunch I want to ask about. If I have an array of 4" drivers, can I get them to have the low frequency extension of a 4" with the horizontal dispersion of a 1"?
Putting a restriction over the face of a woofer is the simplest form of phase plug. The reason I say this, is not because you are looking for a phase plug, but because you want to know that this can be done without causing problems.
The reason it works is because the distance from the edge of the cone behind the plate is similar to the distance from the deeper middle part of the cone to the opening.. and everything in between. It's not perfect but you can certainly try it.

I've had this idea for quite some time....find a six foot long, fifteen-inch diameter section of PVC piping, take a pair of them separated by some five inches & in this gap arrange a whole lot of FR drivers top to bottom.
One could leave the back open, or closed off...???
