What would you choose 6.5" x 4 or 12" x 1 ?

Hi,

I am starting on a subwoofer project, the intended bandwidth is 25Hz to 200Hz. I have a couple of drivers with me and in a dilemma to choose the drivers.
I could use 6.5" x 4 drivers or a 12" car sub driver. Which is better and why?

Thanks and Regards,
WA

I think the decision is affected not only by available enclosure size, amp, electronics, etc. but also desired efficiency, ported vs. sealed enclosure, the specs of the sub drivers such as xmax, and the desired transient response. Also what what woofer will be used "above" the sub? Smaller and sealed can be tighter for example but also not go quite as low. And do you want 25 Hz flat? At the top end, most want to roll off after 100 Hz. No easy answer without a bunch of other factors defined IMO.

6.5” are unlikely to go as low as a 12”. But they ar emore likely to do a good job at 200Hz.

But with 4 you can build 2 off push-push woofers and get better room response and much fewer issue swith building the box. Active reaction force cancelation dramatically reduces the vibrational; load going into the box.

Without knowing what the drivers are, and going up to 200 Hz, the compromise with a single woofer is too great, i’d go with the smaller drivers.

Perhaps the 12" has more "pump capacity" but with four driver you could win with some smart tricks...

1) Vibration - build 2 subs, mount 2 drivers (push-push) on each side of the box and couple their magnets physically to each other for cancellation of the mechanical forces.
2) Placing - with two subs you could place them in corners, gaining some level and directing the energy towards you...
3) Placing2 - you could experiment with positioning the subs so that room modes is mitigated and get a straighter response in the listening position.
4) Parallel connection of drivers lower impedance and might squeeze out more power of your amplifiers (class-d?)

maybe there are more...

Me, as you might understand, would choose the 4 driver solution any day of the week...

With a crossover as high as 200Hz (mid bass or low mid range) the subwoofers location will be apparent. The subs should be stereo and located near the main speakers, or imaging will be poor, and lower registers of instruments will shift between the two.
Even located midway between the main speakers, a single sub would draw attention to it's location crossed at 200Hz in most rooms.

If the sub drivers have equal excursion capabilities, four 6.5" would have a bit more low frequency output than a single 12" even without considering all the other advantages they offer.
