I scored a Conar 221 in good shape today. Seems to work just fine and came with all the original paperwork and a few extra documents as well. I have a Stereo 70 I am
Retubing, this will be nice to have on hand. I used one often in the mid 90s when I was building a lot more vacuum amplifiers. I’m glad to have this at my disposal again…

Nice find indeed @95Honda ! I had one in the past - it was a CONAR model 223, with just a few more odd sockets than your 221 :
That said, don't expect too much from those simple emission testers, which evaluates the emitting power of the cathode under (undisclosed and obscure) proprietary testing conditions - assuming it is in full operation working order, which have to be necessarily checked...
In other words, an emission tester allow you to sort dead tubes from the survivors, but it don't tell you much about the health of the survivors, if I can say so ! If you want to match tubes and compare their performances, you indeed need another type of instrument.

- If it says that the tube is bad, then it is bad (= no emission, shorts, cuts)
- If it says that the tube is average, draw no definitive conclusion about its condition.
- If it says that the tube is good, then chances are that it is effectively good, but again, no definitive conclusion.

@tubelectron Yes, understood 🙂. I used to use a Tektronics 570 for more detailed analysis. This will be used to check random tubes I have no idea the condition of...

Absolutely ! These emission testers are simple and fast units to operate for that purpose : sort the alive from the dead... 😉
This is exactly what I expect from my NRI Model 70 - just like your CONAR 221 is : bought for cheap, in need of some cleaning, calibration and TLC, and voilà !
