Fostex FE168e∑ in Onken. Has anyone tried?

Hi,

Recently picked up a pair of FE168Ez. Thinking of trying them out in a couple of different enclosures.

Looking at a BiB, a basic Voigt Pipe and an Onken.

MH-Audio has a calculator for the Onken, wonder what luck folks have had using it to arrive at a design?

The specs on the FE168Ez seem to lend themselves to an Onken build based on the calculator.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Low bass shelf (historic Onken alignment)/10 litre, max flat in 6 litre (miniOnken has similar response), these are not necessarily optimum but are illustrative.

Thank you!

Think I’m going to start with a BiB as my first build for this, and move onto the Onken after.

My friend bought your plans for the Fonkens, and he has the Fostex FF125 he wants to use in them, so I’ll get to hear what they sound like when those are done. I have a pair of the FF125s also. I could build some BiB’s for those so we can compare the presentation of the drivers in very different enclosures.

I have described the process in detail i a couple threads, i will have to find one.

Short story. ZIG 2-way glue x 2 on the back of the surround/cone interface, coat of thinned ModPodge on the cone (opportunity to change the colour, some examples here & posts after), and at least a coat of 50/50 acrylic gloss o the dust cap. There is a simple EnABL pattern that can be applied before that deals with a specific dustcap resonance if you feel bold.

This is what I use and subjectively to me, it sounds fantastic. The Ribbon Tweeters are a new addition and I haven't listened to them yet. This design was published in Everyday Practical Electronics October 1999. If someone can optimize this type of cabinet for the Fostex168E Sigmas, it will make this worthy driver more popular. Thanks in advance.

Happy to give it a shot…

I think my friend has some ModPodge, the rest of the products shouldn’t be too difficult to get together.

I did. Bought, broke in, EnABLed many (2.5k+), matched and passed them on. Eyesight broke so i to retire from that. I’ll still do easy things like those described.

Not really worth getting me to do just that unless there is no shipping involved (Just finsihed teh described set of mods for a set of FF85wk togo into these:

I understand completely! Thought I would ask 🙂

Damned, those look amazing! Was considering making a template so I could counter sink the ff125 (as well as a pair of fe126’s I have - same size frames believe?) but have put it off. For some reason I find it anxiety inducing 🙂

Morning.

Looking into the products for the tweaks you are suggesting. The ModPodge is pretty straight forward to get, as is the Zig glue. Wondering what acrylic you might suggest for the cap?

The EnABL looks to be a bit above my pay grade🙂
