A Gift option has appeared under messages. It appears to buy membership time for the recipient. I had not seen an announcement of this interesting feature?

Fixed. Please ignore, no plans at this stage to use that feature in posts in the short or medium term future, just installed an add-on which will (eventually) allow for gifting of membership upgrades. The idea of being able to "tip" a post is an interesting one though.
I'm currently learning to code software plugins for the new forum software (XenForo), so we can have features that suit our community and are absolutely unique to our community rather than having to rely on cookie-cutter solutions.
I am updating and improving the membership upgrade system at the moment - it has been an embarrassing mess ever since we migrated to XenForo. That will be fixed shortly. I don't blame anyone for dropping off in their support - I have not been happy with how a lot of of things ended up looking and working here post-migration, but I am working now on fixing them myself. To put it bluntly - there is not anywhere near the financial support presently coming in from memberships to pay for external development assistance.
There is definitely not enough financial support coming in from memberships to cover the costs of hosting, let alone development, at present. Thank you to everyone who has donated past and present to support the running costs.
