single drivers with no filters / electronics..

hi all - still starting out here learning about designing and building speakers and im interested in other designs that use a single driver and enclosure with out any other electronics to affect the sound. ive build the Le Petit and im enjoying the sound very much.. i was reading about the new pearl acoustics that manage to go no-electronics.

curious to hear others who have takes on this challenge; tips or other builds to try out. thanks in advance🙏

no driver is perfect.
If you're willing to live with the flaws, that's up to you... but the quirkiness you might like, might be the nemesis of others.

I never understood the movement of "pure audio" in the "hifi" crowd. I mean, some people are willing to pay thousands for a system that is flawed, just to be part of the "in-crowd" of pure-no-dsp-nor-filters speakers.
It's 2023. There are tools available that make the experience awesome, and they do not take the pleasure away, they enhance it.

Anyway, good luck on your search. Wish you find your audio nirvana.

Here are a couple newly-made TLonken ~ slot MLTL with good frequency response for my hearing range and listening space.

Currently I have one more driver with sufficiently wide and flat response -- 8-inch "drum paper" with whizzer branded Isred/HifiBird/MKHIFI -- that could be used stand-alone without any filter. Out of a nontrivial collection.

That pretty much describes the majority of the speakers you'll see on this section of the forum, so have a browse over the various threads & I suspect you'll be quite enthusiastic about the number of different designs and the creativity shown. Probably something on the order of 99% are using unfiltered wideband (single) drivers. That's basically what the Fullrange forum was set up for, although it does cater for 2-ways using wideband drivers either as a broadband midbass or as a mid-tweeter as well -we're not fascists here. At least, I hope not! 😱

Pure sound is so nice to listen to. Most important, as I see it, is that it is balanced. Preferably as little distortion as possible.
You can like many speakers at the same time even if they sound different.
I have 10 pairs now... All are good in their own way.
Then you mustn't forget the pleasure of building them yourself.

As discussed elsewhere actually not that great a design.
ah yes i remember that thread now 😗

i agree its a strange box but very impressive what the oversizing and baffles can pull out of a little driver.
There are tons of good single driver, nothing but wire between amp & speakers here.

Size, budget, goals?
if any one has a favorite build that does a smaller bookshelf type enclosure id love to see it. .

and i guess another logical next step would be some kind of onken.

A wide one ?

Or sit very close ?

Or maybe a shallow box up against the wall ?

I listen probably under 80db mostly light rock from at least 10' away, so tone controls and a squeak of a loudness button is mandatory for me.

However, a single 3" tang band w3-871s open baffle sounded transparent without any eq, but not when you were more than 3' away (to me).

The only one i know that does not need a filter for me is the Mark Audio CHN110. I did not test them all off course, but of those i tested that is it.

I use it in a big MLTL, but it can also be used in a 25 to 30L bookshelf/standmount speaker, tuned to 40-45Hz (depending on how you do it).

Almost all others need at least a singe notch filter to tame the resonances.

Some time ago I replaced the original drivers in a pair of Frugel-Horns with Mark Audio MAOPs. Nothing else I've heard in this room comes close. One to audition if you get the chance, imho.
