6SN7 - Schiit Freya... I have a Schiit Freya (not +)...I'd like to do some tube rolling. I bought it second hand, with 6SN7EH Electro Harmonics and Tung Sol 6SN7GTB SOL tubes. Sounds great, but I want to see if different tubes will change the sound in some positive way. What would you folks suggest I might want to try. Looking to spend around $50 a tube......Thanks
I used adapters and 6F8G's. Be warned. I had to enlarge the openings slightly to accommodate the adapters.

Don't laugh... 6N8S are among my favourites... Don't waste 50$ per 6SN7 unless you're going for an exotic looking Linlai or something.

Could be. I mean I've had a couple end up being microphonic, but not any more noise than the RCA tubes I switched from.
I'm not sure about your particular application, but GE 6SN7GTA with grey plates and side getter are excellent sounding tubes. Vacuum Tube Valley #11 listening tests stated "GE 6SN7GTA ( 1953). A tube with nice imaging and a romantic, satisfying sound. In addition, it had powerful bass and detailed, accurate mids. Rating 94" One of my favorites.

Tube Rolling! Schiit Freya... OMG! Can't believe the difference these GE 6SN7GTB tubes made. I used to question all this tube rolling stuff...No longer! I bought new Tung-Sol 6SN7GTB and Electro Harmonics 6SN7, This is what the Freya had when I bought it a couple years ago, second hand. I figured the tubes might be old and need replacement.....And I found a set of matched, NOS General Electric 6SN7GTB for a reasonable price. Put the GE tubes in the right slots and the new TS in the left.....Amazing difference. Much deeper and tighter bass....but the big improvement is vocal. Much more out front and better definition. More than just a subtle improvement....Will be mixing and matching to see what other combinations bring.
Blah blah blah. Noise? Hum? Distortion? Audio bandwidth? Instruments used? Source and load characteristics? Voltages and currents used during tests? New or used? Circuit configuration?
I'm glad to hear that you like the GEs. The GE 6SN7GTA is significantly better than the GTB. The top rated Sylvania 6SN7W is even better sounding than the GTA, but rare.
Soviet era 6N8S can sound very good, but you need to buy a bunch and sort through them in my experience. They don't have the "romantic" sound of the GE, and are more neutral in tonality.
Osvaldo, the VTV article does have some of the info on pp6-7 of Issue #11. From page 9, the listening test "was conducted in the VTV listening studio with the following equipment: VTV Octal Line Stage, Pilot SA232 basic EL84 stereo amp (rebuilt), B&W DMl 10 speakers, Sony CD player and Monster Cable speaker wire." Yes, it's certainly a teaser description. I interpret it as a euphonic character. Listen to it and find out what they meant.
