There, I fixed it! The best speaker repair jobs

Just found this on a german flea market site and had to share. The seller "repaired" a pair of Behringer B2031A speakers with some type of Pioneer car audio coax speaker and a piezo horn. That'll be €200. Enjoy 🙂

I remember my first speaker box build.
A couple of Fane 12-50WRMS drivers in a sealed box.
Tried to bolt speaker to box.
Screwdriver on front and spanner on rear.
Slipped and screwdriver went right through the cone !
Managed to pull cone back through small hole and glued it.
It went on to give years of good performance on a mobile disco.

I remember “fixing” one that somebody gave me because it was NFG. An old 60’s era 15” co-ax with a blown tweeter and bad VC rub. Still in the “cabinet” which had been sawn off an old console stereo. Took it and a 100’ extension cord out to the trash pile behind the dorm and plugged it in. Pieces of cone went flying for less than a second. Then I proceeded to drill holes in the cabinet and paint a big “Philips” symbol on it. We were into Philips-bashing and wanted everyone to know who “fixed” it.

I had forgotten that I applied a similar bodge job to my main speakers (Philips 22AH587 MFB). In a moment of utter stupidity ("I'm so tired but let me just fix this one thing...") I slipped with the screwdriver and punctured the surround of one of the woofers. Used some black insulation tape to cover the slit I made and forgot all about it to this day. Sometimes it's amazing what you can get away with.
You should have mentioned it has "extra sound" 😊
It's similar to the trick you see so often in crime series on TV where the cop takes a blurry, black and white picture to his computer whiz kid who then sharpens the image to where it's crystal clear again. And he even manages to restore the colors!

And people say that old woofers have limited excursion capabilities!

Maybe it's time for a new speaker parameter. After Xlin, Xmax and Xdam, I present: Xbzzt! The parameter that describes how far the cone will fly from mains voltage!

I can relate as I have a long running love-hate relationship with old Philips gear. They had a lot of good ideas. I²C, I²S, CDs, Cassettes, MFB. Lots of cool stuff. Execution was sometimes **** poor though. And don't get me started on the capacitors.

Don’t get me started on the capacitors either. I’ve only had one and exactly one Mallory CGS go bad, and it was a 1979 date code. Its three sisters from the same batch are still in operation in a 300 WPC amp I still use on the bench. A whole case of 10 year old Philips soup cans went bad on me and I had to throw them out. The rubber seals dried out and cracked - then the innards all dried up. I had two batches of Philips smaller (100 uF) caps get leaky in the bins and get goo all over. They were several years old, but I have a batch of 470uF Nichicon axials from 1978 that still measure good. No leaks. It can be done, but not by Philips.

But the worst were the simple things - like effing light bulbs. Ones that short out when they blow, and go POP! And throw sparks from the socket. “Philips isn’t worth a ****” started with that. Then anything that was NFG (including that speaker) was called “Philips”.

A TDA1520 power amp IC that caught fire on me didn’t help things either.
