Bonsai and others may be saddened to hear that SETI pioneer Frank Drake, of 'Drake Equation' fame, has died at the age of 92.

Oh dear - that is sad. RIP
IIRC the equation was actually the handiwork of him, Carl Sagan and a few other participants at a meeting held at a hotel in Florida. It ended up having his name attached to it for some reason.

Really? My mom was 5' 3". Liz looked shorter to me, like 4' 8" or so, verging on a m...short person. 🤔
Short people withstand high G-forces better. Their hearts are closer to their brains and feet, so it takes less pressure to pump blood toShe was 5 ft 2 inches tall so the other 3 must have been short ***** as well.
their extremities. Pressure in a liquid column equals h*rho*g, you know.
Astronauts are typically positioned on their backs, so that maximum G-forces are applied from front-to-back, rather than from head-to-toes or vice versa. Fighter pilots doing aerobatics, however, have no such luxury.
Decades ago, I remember reading that there had been some research done by the US military or space program, which found that women could typically tolerate higher G-forces than men, and therefore were capable of out-flying men in high G fighter jet dogfights.
This was largely because the women were statistically shorter, and therefore able to tolerate higher G-forces than the men.
In those oh-so-sexist times, I expect those research results never got any traction with Air Force authorities.
Anyhow, this is why, should you be a yet another bored billionaire, you should not ever buy a space ticket for your pet giraffe!

Yes - I remember reading that that they preferred people under 5’10 for the astronaut program.

To what end they say they have more but can't show them? Why say anything at all if you can't show them?

Fear sells easy. Apple seems to have figured it out as well. The military has seemingly wanted to tell the public and Congress that UFOs are very much real and a threat, and that it needs more funding to determine what they are and, perhaps, protect us against them. But it continues to hold the videos close to the vest.

Part of a gradual public conditioning process, maybe?https://www.vice.com/en/article/4ax...ed-releasing-them-will-harm-national-security

It seems that little of the public has reacted with fear. Some have reacted with increased curiosity, but it seems mostly to be a non-reaction.Fear sells easy. Apple seems to have figured it out as well.
As far as using the fear of UFO/Aliens to get more defense funding, how much UFO based funding are they requesting? Less than a hundred million dollars? I don’t know, however, the Pentagon’s now shut-down AATIP program budget was a measly 22 million dollars, IIRC. On the other hand, the 2022 U.S. defense budget is almost 800 billon dollars! Doesn’t seem to add up that they would think scaring people with thermal blob infra-red UFO videos would result in more than a marginal relative increase in the defense budget. To get the public frightened enough to produce a significant increase in defense funding would probably require the Pentagon to pit on public display an actual recovered saucer, never mind producing crystal clear video footage.

It's just another funding scheme along with others regularly employed, not a scare tactic. A certain % of their budget consists in dealing with this particular issue. To receive it they have to keep it relevant. It's a bureaucracy like any other. But don't go gettin' yer wires/tentacles crossed thinking they will actually spend it for this purpose...just like any other bureaucracy. ☕
You mean something like this..Part of a gradual public conditioning process, maybe?

This ones a bit of a hoot. Its about a group of aircraft apprentices, who made a bunch of UFOs as a prank.

Lippmann and Bernays campaigned for this stuff in the 1920s.You mean something like this..

I think we can't rule out self-fulfilling prophecies. Might be some weird zeitgeist thing that we don't yet understand. As in why/how it works. But I can totally see it as far as some groups being willing to try it. But that means the Simpson's authors are into it as well.Lippmann and Bernays campaigned for this stuff in the 1920s.
Can't it be used to access "dark budgets" or whatever they're called? As far as using the fear of UFO/Aliens to get more defense funding, how much UFO based funding are they requesting? Less than a hundred million dollars?
In my opinion the first line of defense for every democracy is independent journalism. If you control the media apparatus you can start "tweaking" said democracy. Somehow people in power always have (develop even?) "good" reasons for controlling it.Social trends are constantly reinforced by the media.
Social trends are constantly reinforced by the media. There's no doubt it plays a huge role in establishing and maintaining new norms considered progressive by those in power to legislate them.
This is an understatement. Media tells us what to wear, what to eat, what to think. They constantly reinforce their hegemony with gaudy glamour and vapid yet vulgar personas.
What exactly do the Kardashians do again? I forgot what they're famous for. Did they invent the Pentium chip? Did they broker world peace? What makes them so valuable to society anyway?
And now Hillary and Chelsea Clinton are going to do some kind of reality show with the Kardashians. I crap you negative. I heard it on the TV this morning. This tidbit was on the "news."
So now they're going to solve the world hunger problem, restore democracy to Ukraine, and exorcise fashion faux pas, all in one episode. I can't wait!
the Kardashians.
There is a non-zero chance that she's been taken over by a brain-slug type alien parasite and is controlling the world through a type of mass hypnosis. Or might be some plebeian entertainment fueling plebeian hopes and dreams.
