At the moment I am in the same boat. I was also told my education has “expired”. As if one did not gain experience in the time after education. This really bothered me during my time of underemployment/unemployment. I can't get a decent job but an incompetent hack can? It drove me crazy until I realized that employment in this county had little to do with ability any more; it was largely driven by demographics and data. And since I was over 50, my demographic data (my college degrees) were "expired" according to prospective employers.
Then astonishment when you know formulas and calculations by head. Does not matter much anymore, age counts.
Astonishment at my side when I discovered “gender” and skin color make a difference and then education is less of an issue. “Equal chances” it is called.

A lot of it is the perception that older workers are out of date. Plus employment is analyzed by algorithms, so if you don't "tick the boxes" your resume goes in the circular file.
I too know the solutions to common configurations of circuits by heart, like a big chart with parameters vs answers I've memorized through repetition. I also have whole trigonometric and log tables memorized because of repetition.
But that doesn't matter at all. I know young people look at me with derision, like I'm clueless. But the joke's on them, because before they know it they'll be old and in the way.

I don't let the "younger crowd" bother me.
It's not all of them of course, just the snotty ones.
I've had customers like them, come into my shop, telling ME what to do, and how to do it.
I sometimes tell them that the piece of mind that they just gave me left them with nothing left.

In an interview he did in the 1970's, Naim founder Julian Vereker said that he couldn't come up with a name for the company that he was entirely happy with, so he decided to just call it "name", but with a different spelling. And what's with Naim Audio anyways? A play on 'name brand'?
(At the time I had a Naim NAC12 preamplifier and NAP120 power amplifier. They were every bit as good as the advertising claimed. I should have kept them - they are really hard-to-get collector's items these days).

Add mind reader to your list 😎Ya ya, back to yer fishin' hole gray beard.
What a strange series of twists and turns this thread has taken.
In reflection, three thoughts came to mind that were planted there by some person or experience from what I consider to be my mediocre education.
“A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.”
“The only thing I know is that I know nothing at all.”
“The moment you become unteachable is the moment you have failed.”

I don't really agree with the first of these two statements. I know a lot of things about a lot of subjects but the more knowledge I accumulate the more questions I have.“The only thing I know is that I know nothing at all.”
“The moment you become unteachable is the moment you have failed.”
As for the second one I consider a day on which I didn't learn something as a day wasted.
The audio use of 'bass' comes from the Latin bassus meaning 'low'. Not misspelled, not misused.
My only personal use and interpretation of the quote, and the reason it stuck in my mind I think, is that it reminds me that many people at some time in their lives have a transitional moment from a mind set that could be described as a “Know it all” to one where perhaps they realize they don’t know as much as they thought.I know a lot of things about a lot of subjects but the more knowledge I accumulate the more questions I have.
Perhaps what they thought made them so smart might be completely irrelevant in “The big picture”?
Is it just a matter of perspective or wording then?
The more you know, the more you realize you don’t know because it leaves you with more questions?
For me, it leads to the final quote and poses the question of “Are you teachable?”
That’s as far as my IQ, mediocre education and attention span can take me.😉
And some don't and show this by their choice of online handles... It's odd but on the internet it used to be quite easy to guess the rough age of posters but it's getting harder. Or I'm losing it, which might be more likely 😀many people at some time in their lives have a transitional moment from a mind set that could be described as a “Know it all” to one where perhaps they realize they don’t know as much as they thought.
Is that a Benny Hill skit? 🙂wandered off course? It's become the 4 yorkshiremen sketch!
I agree. And some don't and show this by their choice of online handles... It's odd but on the internet it used to be quite easy to guess the rough age of posters but it's getting harder. Or I'm losing it, which might be more likely 😀
The basic internet and its inherent quality of virtual-ness, its silent human seperation, will always lack real-life person-to-person quality, asides from the video-type communication on some sites (zoom, face-time, etc).
On here, and other sites, you really don't know who your conversing with.
People could be typing lies, misinformation, or playing with your head in convincing ways.
And how would you know who's real or whatever?
My stating that I'm a trained, experienced, long-time, and highly regarded technician is for all intents and purposes just typing on a silent keyboard to you. - I could be some nasty boogie-man, full of stories, right?
Unless we've met in person, and you've gotten to know me for some time, you'll never really be able to determine who I really am.
Even this online business review of me from years ago could be faked! (but no, it's real) - people these days have the ability to do things like that for evil purposes.
I stole my online handle from my pop.
He was dubbed “chromenuts” in the Coast Guard by his buddies because he never stopped talking about cars.
I went through the same thing with cars for a period in my life. I even fell back on my mechanical skills for a living when things fell apart in my pursuit of a career in academia. I didn’t deal with the politics well.
I thought the idea of an online handle was to be creative. Perhaps that’s just my background in the arts.

Which is fair.I stole my online handle from my pop.
Depends really. Any number of reasons why someone would want to hide their name when on line, from paranoia, to protecting certain clearances to just being a bit shy. Once you decide to hide your name why not be creative? If I was creating an online handle it would be 'the moog' but that wouldn't work as the joke would be limited to over 45s in UK. So a truncation of my name it is. Wouldn't take much for anyone to find the missing bit if they were that bored so I leave it at that.I thought the idea of an online handle was to be creative. Perhaps that’s just my background in the arts.
Artistically I am the equivalent of a grenade in a paint pot mind 🙂
