That's because you are in a two dimensional world and can not see (or measure or experience) the expansion that is happening in the 3rd dimension.

That was the whole point of my thought experiment....
in response to this Tony I am sure there will be a few readers that agree with me that we already live in a multi dimension,Love and other emotions are in another dimension

Wait a minute... now you're introducing terms from Humanities... I'm sort of sticking here with Physics....

Is there a geometry to love and "other emotions"?

I'm sure Newton and Marconi were horny old goats that drank wine and had lots of love and other emotions, but they avoided that in their work.

"Give me a fixed point and I will move the whole world." - yes, I think this is still a relative problem, created due to lack of external reference. You analogy with map coordinates is OK but still (seriously) problematic as it is indeed only valid for distance measurements with some pretty severe limitations ;-) - hence the invention of GPS - a measurement system with an "external" reference.

I think you miss the point I'm trying to make (Oh, I "fixed" the geodesic problem mapped onto cartesian coordinates by purposely choosing a short distance where the curvature of the Earth doesn't affect the measurement much.)

My introduction of the GPS was a freebee.. In essence, within the Flatland example, there is no possible additional dimension. My example was that when all you got is latitude and longitude, where altitude is not part of the coordinate system, the distance between two points that are static with respect to those coordinates is always constant.

When we introduce the element of altitude, with GPS just being a measuring tool, not intrinsic to the geometry, now we are introducing a DIFFERENT coordinate system, which is unimaginable to those beings living in the Flatland Space.

The 3rd dimension, to a Flatland native, would by like a 5th dimension in our space-time continuum.

The issue here, you see, is that your "external reference" requires more dimensions that we have to measure our space-time. Thus, it is not available. We are unable to measure the change in our space-time because we do not have the means (metrics if you will) to measure its change.

We can not step outside of our space-time and see it change with a 5D yardstick. We're stuck within it.

Tony you are a gentleman a thinker and very patient thank you,but dare I say your ideas are from others I think in 30 years ideas will be different when another smart guy in a wheel chair and a patent clerk have a bad hair day, after so many years the variations are so big .I know its a combined effort to work to a finite point of thinking ,but what are the elephants holding up the earth doing now?

You'd be surprised, Galu.

According to latest Medical advice, an apple a day keeps the Doctor away!

I have been feeling distinctly unwell lately. Temperature rose to an alarming 37.6 C.

Head spinning. Evil cough. Must be the Covid, right?

Everything returning to normal. 36.6 C and Covid test negative:

Whatever is trying to kill me, it's not Covid. Phew. 🙂

Not actually space its just an illusion

I would say that spacetime is not actually space. You must differentiate between the two terms.

Spacetime is an illusion in the sense that it is outside of our everyday experience.

Space in maths and space in realworld are two different things.

Agree, but it is spacetime in maths and simply space in the 'real' world of our everyday experience.

I think that in 30 years we will not have wheelchairs, instead we will have robotic exoskeletons.. Take a look at Honda's Asimo... imagine the legs wrapped around your legs.

And, I think Hannibal had the right idea, but it must have been one hell of a job to take those Oliphants over the mountain passes.

My ideas, and theory, which are mine, are definitely mine and no body else's, specially a patent clerk that forgot to comb his hair as he got older.

Hi I am back, curious about tachyons, what powers these suckers (where do they get their enegy from?)

Perhaps those hypothetical tachyons are powered by zero-point (vacuum) energy?

Faster than light tachyons would actually slow down if they gained energy, with their slowest possible speed being that of light.

It may have something to do with them being "anti-mass" or "imaginary mass" particles. 🤔

The anti-mass tachyon should have the opposite gravitational effect to particles of normal mass.

Perhaps one day we can warp spacetime with a Tachyon Drive, just like in Star Trek! 😎

P.S. Did you know that the word “tachyon” is derived from the Greek word “tachy”, meaning swift?
