For those in business in car audio

Business is cut to half right now. Some amps I had to return them to the customers because i dont think parts will be available no time soon.
Thanks to my scrap boards i can still repair some class AB amps.I started repairing small appliances to help thing flow.

In my area, middle TN. Business is booming, I can’t keep up with repairs, I’ve had to resort to ordering some parts from AliExpress. So far I haven’t been burnt.

So far I received genuine parts from:

vanxy
Fsxsemi
Golenrida
Syj
Suhms
miaol ke’s
Shop911422165 store

Can’t say for certain you will get genuine parts and I am only measuring transistors in my cheap transistor tester and looking at Vt and Cg. Also comparing the packaging to see if there are any differences. I have only done this for transistors I couldn’t get from any reputable suppliers. ie:
Psmn3r5-80ps

For ICs, I have been installing them and they work.
Hopefully this helps someone. I know recently those who have found sources for genuine parts have been very hesitant to share. My hope is that you all are successful!

Car audio in general here is growing, feels like the 90s again. I don’t do installs or build boxes anymore but get plenty of request. All of the shops I talk to seem busy.

South Africa I am having the same problem with spares. I was thinking maybe we repair guys here should start looking and seeing if we can trade spares with fellow repair guys on this forum. Just a suggestion I am currently doing this with a repair guy here in South Africa. This is working as I can now repair amps that I could not get spares for. I have been burnt from Ali express so I don't think I will try them again

Guys that want to trade spares can PM me (if this ok with you Perry) and lets see how we can help each other out.

The hardest thing to see is a fellow repair guy close his doors due to lack of spares. I mean we help each other with repair tips why not let try to help each other out with spares.

There are distributors that are not 'authorized' on Octopart and are typically a pain to deal with. Would it be possible to have someone buy from one or more of those (possibly with contributions from others) to test and possibly resell those ICs? It could be a new business for someone, but their reputation would be bound to the quality of the parts they re-sold.

For example, look at the non-authorized dealers here:

Sorry but that´s not enough 🙁
Transistor tester stress is minimal: a couple Volts, a few mA., not much better than measuring junctions with the diode test function.
Problem comes when transistors are subject to full voltage, full current, in a power amp played loud.

Now THAT is the way to go.

Yea, so far all have held up under a load test. My large power supply is a series of 4 HP server power supplies the I run on a 240v 20a circuit, that’s hooked to a bank 3s6p 3000f Nesscaps.

I sure do miss being able to have a signature with our equipment resources listed. I know those here who voluntarily go out of their way to help us are hindered by the loss of that feature.

I use old microwave oven primary winding loops for loads. (Obviously removed from there cores and without secondaries present.) all of the ones I’ve encountered so far are a .5 ohm load so pretty easy to get whatever load you want. They do get hot with big amps, so I leave them in a bucket of water.

Recently I wanted to try Amazon for some bjts for a cheap SPL amp I was given. They worked fine at 4 ohm but didn’t get much output at 2 ohms before they popped. Clearly fake transistors, so heads-up as we all have been told, stay away from eBay and Amazon.

Back in around 2005 or 2006 I tried buying irfz44n from eBay to repair a bazooka p Miller amp. I got like 100 fets for $15. They kept blowing a few minutes after loading the amp down. It’s such a shame the fake transistor market is so big. At first to though there were issues with the amp, but later figured out the issue.

It just seems with all the effort and equipment involved in faking or rebadging parts, one could make the a fully capable parts with better profit margins. Obviously those conversations are above my head.

The loss of the sig line was a HUGE loss. You can still get one but you have to be a paid member and that's not feasible for some members.

P. miller amps had a major design flaw (trying to use CEM1 boards as double-sided) and even though it's been known to be a problem, forever, manufacturers of cheap amps still try to use it. The SoundStream rub5.800 (which isn't an old amp) used it. They never learn.

+1 on not buying semiconductors from eBay or Amazon.

For re-marking parts, there are some manufacturers that are having the parts marked with the wrong numbers to try to disguise the circuit. In general, an experienced tech can determine the correct parts, relatively quickly. The easiest are typically the logic ICs. The op-amps and comparators can rely on a bit of trial and error.
