That number appears to be calculated as follows
MAX[ (# of watched threads with unread posts) , (# of "conversations" (private messages) unread) ]
The easy way to make it go away is to mark all "conversations" as read, then mark all watched threads as read.

I think it's as simple as click on the bell on the upper right corner. Maybe mark all as read too, mine is currently cleared.
Right. Is it really so important that it has to clutter our tabs? OK, for some social groups, it IS. But here, it might best be a user option. (Oh joy, more custom programming!)
I agree, I think it's terrible. Very unhelpful when you have multiple tabs open and want to work out which one to go back to. Will be fixed, thanks for the report.
