Status of tube shopping (new production).

I'm more concerned about getting NOS Soviet tubes now. Ukraine and Russia are out for the time being... The only other country I got them from was Bulgaria.

On a side note, does anyone know of a tube with the same pinout as 6F12P?

I was looking at some small P channel mosfets and had to blink a few times, one was listed at 88 weeks!

Oh and speaking of Bulgaria, the seller I purchased from a few days ago is located there. They told me regular airmail to the USA was stopped and had to use a more expensive shipping method called EMS. The price more than doubled but I understand the situation and went through with it.

It's still a russian factory and any money to them will support russian war. Who own's the factory does not matter
Well it is also unsupporting american audio companies (tube things) and unsupporting american jobs. Not all Russian are military and not all american are free of this missfired sanctions, but please stop this before its too late for all, and I mean the off-topic we are talking about tubes not pollitical issues 👌👌

On 2/6, I bought a matched quad of 6P14P apparently from Kropyvnytskyi, Ukraine off ebay. Arrived yesterday.

How's that for timing? On 2/6, I had no idea how things would be for them on 3/6... :'( More like "I need a set of burner 6BQ5s - and I'm not going to pay $50 for them, time isnt an issue... Hmmm".

Financial sanctions is the only weapon the West has to try and contain this horrific conflict.

It is unfortunate that many of the new production tubes are Russian, but every dollar could make a difference to prevent this conflict reaching some critical mass of escalation, impacting nations that are currently far away and oblivious.

There are ethical grey lines within this hobby, with a love of tubes in audio. For instance WW2 tubes, including tubes made specifically for V2 rockets using slave labour. However this time the events are unfolding in front of us, so throw-away remarks about 'stop being political' do not hold water.

Good discussion that doesn't have to get political. Over the past two years I've bought many tubes from Russian Federation sellers as well as Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Czech Republic, etc. on ebay. The Russian block sellers on eBay are just regular folks trying to make a living. Folks who somehow acquired a cache of tube stocks as the Soviet empire broke up. I was thinking of this whole situation the other night. I believe the guitar amplifier market and millions of bedroom guitar players young and old will sustain the demand for tubes. The war is less an issue than if there is loss of demand for tubes. The latter is a supply chain interruption the loss of demand closes factories forever.

Sanctions will likely result in a factory shutdown. The $64,000 question is how permanent it will be. New Sensor owners may just decide it’s not worth getting in the middle of, take their ball and go home. If they followed the rules of the DIYAudio forum, they would. How practical would it be for them to just set up in the Far East somewhere? How long would it take before things are up and running? Would there be quality issues? personally, I’m not designing anything around new production tubes until I see how all this plays out - even if it takes 10 years.

So basically if guitar amp makers faced with the interruption in wartime supply, decide to switch to transistors and next generation of adolescent bedroom guitarists never know the feel of tubes, poof goes the demand. Audiophiles will always have enough money to support a factory making limited production at ridiculous prices. But a New Sensor needs volume.

I don't think it will be possible to move their factories, all this years they have been in Russia all the other potential factories (JJ and I think also China) they we're based in western block and russian tooling, or may I say older equipment.🤔
Buying things from russia will strengthen their ability to make war. Is that so hard to understand ?? Any dollar
sent to russia means one dollar more to support their army
Last time I saw they weren't using tubes for tanks.......Is easy to say such things, I just say last time media, and major Europe economy was this controlled (or may I say woke and "taking the lead") was when the past WWs broke up....... taking part in something can be as easy as that, It will surely scalate as long they all stop putting it's finger on, It will worsen if more boots and fingers take part in the same, the 'good ones' if you like are also stopping their economy in some way, is like the envious little kid that take out his ball of the game when he can't control the game development, they say growing wise is lots more slower than getting old cause there are people that is just old 👍
You can see this is the same idea, just two people can argue like this about tubes yet full countries. Sorry for the Off-topic

Upscale Audio removed ALL new-production tubes from their site on Friday and then some, take a look, only a handful of assorted things.

TubeDepot appears to have set all Russian tubes to 'not for sale' after they sold out of on-hands. Non-Russian tubes (JJ, Chinese) are mostly sold out or on backorder (and you can only imagine how long it will take to fill those)

TubesAndMore is in a same boat and also taken massive price increases

So yeah, this will be fun and I cannot see this being anything that will not take years to change.

I looked for 6F12P yesterday... There used to be tons of listings on eBay and other stores. Now the only place I can find them is a Russian store that I can't buy from.

I guess it's time to redesign my VA/PI... Thankfully, I have a stockpile of a bunch of the common tubes I use. Who knows if I'll ever be able to buy more Soviet tubes.

I'd also be curious to know how much tube gear was sold in the past few years as people were spending more time at home. No secret there was a massive spike in the sales of audio gear, including a lot of tube gear.

I know sales at Decware blew up with a combo of popular reviews and people being home. The waitlist went from dozens to hundreds and checking today...1,433 people (some of those with multiple products). That alone is about 10,000 tubes going out the door. Decware has pulled some tubes off their site as well (a mix of Soviet NOS and new production).

While the tubes last long, SOOOO many tube pre headphone, turntable, preamps going out. Schiit and Bottlehead for example. Just more and more pressure on things - and especially something like a headphone amp on a desk, likely will get a lot of use and will burn thru tubes at a decent clip (not using it for 4 hours on Sunday morning).

Point being, a lot of these people will be starting to look for, need tubes in the coming months and years...what will they find?

If anything, China is as much a US enemy as Russia, yet no one even dreams of blocking trade with them.
Some people did refuse to buy Chinese tubes, and it was nice to have an alternative. Personally, I was under the impression that New Sensor was better than Chinese quality-wise. Which may or may not actually be true. It’s going to be a problem getting tubes regardless now. Getting transistors has been a problem for a while now - and that seems to be getting worse not better.

Besides tubes most Baltic birch void free wood is now on hold the pricing already doubled after the economy opened, shipping costs were insane, almost $40k for a container.

This was the response from new sensor

"Attention All EHX Tube Customers

Yesterday, Russia imposed a ban on the export of some 200 goods in response to the sanctions imposed on it over the current conflict in Ukraine. We have confirmed that the ban applies to our seven brands of Russian tubes. Currently, the ban is set to remain in effect until the end of the calendar year.

Given this export ban, we will not be receiving any further tube inventory for these brands. A myriad of pressures — including continued strains on the supply chain, escalating internal expenses, mounting inflation, and an ever-evolving legal landscape (particularly in light of the Ukraine conflict) — have created a very fluid and ambiguous environment. Until we can properly assess the impact of these factors, we will not honor any new orders or ship any more Russian tubes on back order.

Rock & Roll,
Mike Matthews
Founder & President"
