Well, yes, it´s common stuff in intercoms, including appartment door openers.
For voice only band they work fine and simplify things.

I see the photo. That's fun and I think I have the same TV speakers. Some very early microphones used a carbon rod to modulate a current. I would image your speaker mic is better than those.
P.S. We have used speakers wired up as mics to embarrass friends. Think of the "Hot Lips" scene from the movie M.A.S.H. 😀
