The damping material works on sheet metal because its much heavier/denser than the metal. That wouldn't be the case with most home building materials.
What's the wall construction like?
Is the material resonating or it is vibrating against the studs?

wall is 2"x6" studs, 16" apart, on that wall paneling 1/8" thick (the 70's style). It is NOT vibrating against the studs (many screws added) only between studs.
Hi Perry, yes if I find no other solution, I will wait till spring & redo the wall with drywall/sheetrock. I am really not looking forward to that, as there will be a lot of dust AND the HT room has drop ceiling that will have to be modified since current panelling is only 1/8" thick & drywall is thicker. Oh well...
Most of the dust comes from the sanding. A good floater will be able to finish it with little (or maybe no) sanding. A damp sponge can get it smooth enough if the trowel work is really good.
