Curious where the best place to put the dry wet knob would be.... should I put it before the output transformer, or after?
Depends on your circuit. A clue would probably help.
I use an MC3340 or a single JFet if solid state or an EF86 with an ECC83 if valve.

Not sure it would be useful there.
A wet/dry knob is useful when you have different sounds, say dry/reverb , chorused or not, distorted ornot,etc. , but in a compressor "both sounds are the same",only one has stable level and the other jumps up/down.
With the side effect that the uncompressed sound will overpower the other or disappear all the time, by virtue of its different dynamics ... but sound is still the same.
Can´t find a better example than comparing it to a "bread sandwich": one slice of bread between 2 others, all from the same package ... it can be done, but what´s the point?
There is a way more useful control adjusting compressed to uncompressed ratio : the Compression knob.
It will do exactly what you are trying to achieve.

But I don´t think the OP is trying to do that; I see it more in the line of "hey, my effects loop dry/wet pot allows me to set intermediate settings of all my other effects, why not on this one?", hence my answer.
We´ll know more the day he gives us more details.
Or in other words: I am imagining a simple setup, not a sophisticated one.

If your source is lossless digital files (flac, ape, etc)... The Mini DSP does this sort of thing really well with a plug in, to where it can still be called "hi fi". I don't use it for serious listening, but for a party background music compression works great to impart low volume clarity when there is noise and talking going on. I always use a little compression when I DJ for our swing dance group too, that was before covid.
I agree with all the above. I don't think the OP has this in mind. I was simply answering your "what's the point"
