I was told to post here so please be gentle, I'm a noobie 🙂
I'm in search of holographic 3d like soundstage and when i came across quadraphonic headphones that's exactly what I wanted to do! I ordered an old vintage toshiba quadraphonic phone. I tried to find the sizing of the drivers so I could order new ones but I guess I'll have to wait.
I am going to be making new shells for them since I can't tear apart the great looking stock pieces. I was going to do 2 50mm 32ohm drivers on each side and was wondering if I needed to get any special components to get this done.
Just so you know I am trying to build FUN headphones just to see what happens. I have nothing to do and this seems like a great hobby for me. I already have my other headphones for what I need...but now I want to just build something outrageous for indoor use. Its main use will be for gaming or listening to them on my bed with music or movies.
So I have a few basic questions:
1. They come with 2 6.5mm plugs for the front and rear. I know they make dual 6.5mm plugs that come out to a single 6.5mm plug, could I still that with my XDUOO XD05 that accepts 6.5mm connections? I understand that the sound might be in mono, but would it work or is the electrical system in them totally different.
2. What size wiring should I get for the headphone speakers?
3. Are there any passive components I can add in to change the sound of the speakers? I know this is done at the amp level with tubes or whatever amp you choose.
And yes, I am crazy.

Haha . But on my other thread they mentioned That it should be in the headphones forum. Sorry about that!Yes, you are. Starting multiple identical threads is against forum rules.

My open baffle headset does most of what you are looking for. Crazy depth in games and imaging. The improvement over good headsets is enormous, so much that my Hifiman HE400SE feels terrible compared to my design. Reflections are the root of all evil 😉. My design uses an AMT tweeter and 50mm dynamic driver.
Interesting! I'll have to look onto this. I own 4 or 5 pairs of quadraphonic headphones, which are fun, but still don't compete with speakers in a room.My open baffle headset
I haven't tried queadraphonic headphones so I don't know how mine would compare to that.. But mine sound a lot different than regular headphones. They dont yet give the effect of room speakers which all the sounds comes from the front, but then again they produce sound coming from the back much better than a stereo pair of speakers. To get more "in front sound" you can put the drivers even more forward and closer to your head. I've played a lot with loose drivers just holding them at different positions around my ears. Its a great learning experience^^. Im thinking of making a new version without a pad between the drivers and my head(drivers can get even closer to my head). That will create a more forward coming sound with vocal coming from the front of my head vs inside. My goal was to create the ultimate gaming headphones so I had to make something that still could recreate sound coming from behind me. What is shocking to me is that more people havent realized that either front/rear driver reflection destroys the imaging, and so does standing waves. Most speakers diy'ers comes to this conclusions quite quickly from playing with toe in or narrow/wide dispersion designs. When you realize that every enclosed headset on earth has 3 standing waves(one in each dimension like a room) you suddenly realize that focusing on driver improvement is a dead end. The wavelengths are so long that you cant absorb them either. So the obvious solution to me was to go open baffle.
does it make any bass?My open baffle headset does most of what you are looking for. Crazy depth in games and imaging. Only down to 45Hz with 9db bass boost. But this is with a el cheapo 40mm bass driver. I have a 50mm on order so that will improve soon 🙂 But the bass that you have is super tight so it blends well with the AMT sound. I would classify my build as a bass light headset which is what I wanted for Pubg. I dont want grenades to conceal incoming footsteps from enemies. My Hifiman HE400SE is too bass heavy for this reason. I would also like to mention that this dual driver approach is a great way to get high end sound for pennies but it takes eq experience. I get some brakeup from the bass driver in the treble so that is removed with eq notch filters. I have considered a lpf filter but that would mess with the phase.. The AMT driver is not cheap but its the only AMT that is small enough for headphone use. You also need to be able to estimate driver spl difference and estimate that into a dampening resistor value for the tweeter. But for a speaker builder this is plane sailing. Getting a high efficiency bass driver with natural treble roll off is crucial to get this running on a regular amp. My driver on order will hopefully have higer sensitivity than my current one. If it makes the headset easy enough to drive for a pc I will publish a link for the aliexpress driver. If anyone here know of a good driver please send me a link since this is an ongoing project.

I've listening to a driver I received in the mail today and its very good for the price! A bit midrange/treble focused but the bass is tight and is good enough for rock. At 16ohm its very dynamic and works well in a BT 4.2Vlipo driven headset. Its sounds very broadband so should work well for all sort of tweaks. Its the best on ALI at this pricepoint by a mile! https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003441738083.html?spm=a2g0o.9042311.0.0.3ddd4c4doXfYRI
