Go forth and multiply ...
When Noah's ark had finally come to a rest on top of mount Ararat, and when the waters had receded, Noah and his family - along with all the animals - left the ark, and God told them to go forth and be fruitful . nd re-populate the Earth.
Noah dispatched the animals with the instructions to go out and multiply. Soon there were baby lions and tigers and sheep and goats and frogs and every other sort of animal... except the adders. The adders refused to multiply, they would only add.
And Noah fearing the wrath of God who had told him to make ALL the animals multiply called his family together and explained the problem.
Noah's oldest son Sham was a smart kid who had an idea. He took the two disobedient snakes and locked them in the woodshed.
Two weeks later they came back and opened the woodshed door and out slivered the snakes followed by 20 baby adders. Noah was ecstatically happy.
"Sham my Son, how did you do this? Before you put them into the wood shed the adders would only add. Now look at them, they have multiplied. Its a miracle!"
"No father its not a miracle, just maths".
"I got them to use logs!"
Here's an adder for ya. Good nite!

I always enjoy Biblical Stories.
I like the one in St. Mark when the disciples were in an utter panic on the Sea of Galilee in a Storm. The "Chosen One" was awoken from his calm snooze, doubtless with the Magdalene at his side, at the back of the ship by them. "Lord, Lord, we fear for our lives!"
Did they really think they was gonna drown with the "Son of God" onboard? Really. 😕
Anywhoo, imagine my glee tonight when clearing Fire Exits in advance of our 5-yearly Council Inspection tomorrow.
The Church-goers have been discarding their PCs. No, I don't know why either. Brought them into my room for storage. But curiosity got the better of me. Not many people know I was named "MVP" Computer Advisor by Novatech in 2006.
Carefully stripped of all incriminating hard drives. The ancient Athlon 64 Compaq was of no interest. The Dell Pentium 4 was similarly dull. But the big Home build caught my eye!
A medium Gamer ca. 2007, Good power supply. Lots of fans. Arctic 7 Freezer Pro processor cooler. Possibly a quad Intel Q9400 processor, and a modest NVidia 8600GT GPU. Goodish MS-7514 motherboard stripped of DDR2 memory, but I still have some. But the icing on the cake is the Church-goers missed the slim SSD hard drive lurking in a slot.
I wonder what dubious activities I shall detect theiron. Being a man who can bypass Windows passwords in a flash with Linux. Can't wait. And I expect you can't either. But must catch up on the football now. Minnesota are at the Chargers. 😀

Just because I CAN do something, doesn't mean I WOULD! But always fun to think about the possibilities! If you are skilled, you know that even some old clunker of a PC came with a license for Windows which otherwise can cost £100. A copy of Norton Utilities and a Linux CD could do far more than you'd expect.... 😱
This oldish Computer is clearly an Overclocker! A very Dark Art which, as an Independent Forum Advisor, I always encouraged people to pursue since it cost nearly nothing to make your computer run half as fast again as Intel strictly approve. They would rather you bought the next more expensive processor.
The fast stuff actually uses exactly the same semiconductor die as the slow stuff. The rest is Marketing. 🙄

As someone who has had many a computer into his shop over the years I find the idea of going through a customer's personal files without discussing it with them first, to be repugnant.fun to think about the possibilities!
I'm sure you do. We are all white as the driven snow. But what does Facebook and WhatsApp do, but go through your personal files? 🙂
OK, they might have some install options that might limit their powers of search, but they know my entire Phonebook, all my email contacts and just about everybody I have ever sent a message to or contacted. And you can't delete this data. 😱
The Government and Police intercepts and reads all my emails, and even listens to phone calls, by looking or listening for keywords of interest by computer, and then manually reading them if of interest. It's how it works. Sorry if that doesn't lighten the mood. 🙂

The idea of files being not private is repugnant, but an ugly fact.
And to be pedantic, those are abandoned computers, so the owners would not have any value or though about their data.
In any case, he is reducing pollution by keeping something from the landfill.
Another reason some of my friends physically destroy damaged hard disks.
And apart from porn, all he may find is old bank records, or something the owners did not consider of any use.
Yes, a lot of people are careless with passwords, so if he wants, maybe he can use their e-mail accounts, and cause all sorts of problems.
Agreed, unethical, repugnant, voyeuristic...but legal.

Thankyou for the heads-up on the legal situation. I haven't snooped the drive so far, as it goes.
The Adventures of system7 continue into a new day and a different topic.... 😀
Remember the NP electrolytic Capacitor puzzle I was set by my friend near Brussels via PM?
Simply wanted to buy some new ones for his ancient loudspeakers.
NIGHTMARE!!!! 😱
Told me he used to buy them from Falcon Acoustics in Oxford, England.
But since Britain's divorce from the EU finds that on top of 36.64 Euros to Falcon, he must now pay an additional 25.06 Euros in Taxes and whatever.
I sent him off to European suppliers. But couldn't resist noticing that one of them was giving away free capacitors. Advised him to try it on by ordering a couple of paying ones, and try slipping in an order for hundreds of the free 3.3uF ones. Which he could then sell. Sounds like a Plan?
NO, didn't work. The free ones wouldn't go into the shopping basket. But a good try. 😎

To be clear, Steve, by "sometimes you sail in choppy waters", I was simply referring to your interpretation of the Biblical Story.
It was interesting to see that others found fault elsewhere in your post.

Now you've tipped them off. Thanks. 😕
"Loose Lips sink Ships", as I was warning my young nephews one day on the foolishness of discussing private family matters at school with their less discreet friends. They kept saying it for days afterwards. 😀

WRONG.And to be pedantic, those are abandoned computers, so the owners would not have any value or though about their data.
They did ALL care VERY MUCH about their personal data, so much so that ALL **removed** their hard disks.
That tiny SSDisk remained ONLY because owner didn´t see it, since it´s small and was tucked "somewhere else".
Irrelevant. And apart from porn, all he may find is old bank records, or something the owners did not consider of any use.
He clearly stated he can BYPASS good passwords thanks to being technically savvy on a different Operating System (Linux) of which normal users are not even aware.Yes, a lot of people are careless with passwords, so if he wants, maybe he can use their e-mail accounts, and cause all sorts of problems.
We are talking regular Family people, members of a Church, donating their old computers for a good cause, in case somebody may need them, not IT people.
No, not legal. At all.Agreed, unethical, repugnant, voyeuristic...but legal.
The box said 'Requires Windows 10 or better'.
So I installed LINUX 😀
I am a bit peeved to hear you say "Normal" people don't use Linux! I do have Windows too, but consider it intrusive spyware. Anyway, bumped into the discarder of these three computers. Told him he had left an SSD drive, perhaps with private information on it, on the big old gamer. He said he had no concerns on that since it never worked anyway.
Hadn't even overclocked it. Just how it came. Everything Copacetic one feels. I am free to hack away, you will agree. Clearly he knows nothing about computers.

A 2007 gaming computer with DDR 2 Ram would have barely a 10 GB capacity SSD. 945, DG 31 or DG41 chip set.
Not much use.
Now the new computers I have seen have a 256 or 500 GB SSD with the OS on it, all the other programs are on mechanical HDD.
Boots up almost instantly.
Linux allows you to bypass the Windows passwords, but I have not tried to break into Gmail or Yahoo accounts with it.
I don't think it can be done.
You can use a Linux like program to reset Windows passwords if you have locked yourself out, had to do it because my kids tried to set their level to Admin from user...it is a bootable CD, about 180 MB, download and write to use.
As for the legal part, yes data theft and abuse is a pretty serious offense.
But if it is abandoned, it can be considered that the person who left it also abandoned all rights to it, in this case Steve got away with it because it was a broken drive, so not possible to retrieve the data.

Well, I was in for a surprise. It is a 250GB Laptop Hard Drive:
Hitachi TravelStar Z5K320-250
Hitachi TravelStar Z5K320 Review - StorageReview.com
Intel Q9400, a Quad core, if that is what it is in there, isn't too shabby either. Probably faster than my recent AMD Athlon II X4 630. Which I only upgraded for fun, not because it was slow. Linux is not too demanding of processors anyway. I think I can get it running a few old games in Windows too with a 8600GT. Be an adequate PC for internet for sure.
I don't think processors have speeded up much, or memory. Just more cores now.
Anyway, we are probably boring people. Talk about something else.

That image looks like a scene from Moby Dick."Loose Lips sink Ships",

Well. TBH, we don't get two many Whales and Sharks off Portsmouth Beach....
Now I must thank the WISE Forum members of diyaudio for showing me the error of my ways. I was a sinful man. I admit it. But, I have seen the light! 😀
Was knocking this over-specced PC Case into shape this afternoon:
Decided to Defluff the Power supply at the bottom left. Full of what we PROFESSIONALS call Dust-Bunnies. You could stuff a pillow with all the fluff in there. Surprised it hadn't caught fire. Who designed this thing?
Knocked on Neighbour Colin's door. The previous owner of this machine. Wondered if he had a Hoover suction cleaner. Lent me his Dyson. We got talking whilst I cleared the Dust-Bunnies.
Seems he is considering upgrading his current ancient Microsoft XP PC because all new printers, which his Mother likes using, need Windows 10. I happen to know his old broken XP one was a Hewlett-Packard. In fact I have it. It's just like my largely unused old one. So I gave him my working HP Printer and drivers disks. In return, he, the Packrat, gave me the RAM sticks, CD and DVD drives for the old computer.
Everybody Happy. He even has spare ink cartridges for the HP! He can use his old PC. I have a free PC with Windows License. Showing the Importance of Free Trade. I suspect his Bible-Bashing Mother sends me and everyone else these pictures of our impending "Better World". Bless Her. All printed on her boy, Colin's computer. We can now expect lots more. 😎
