Book "Beyond The Dial", Leonard Lander, has a passage of interest in this community.

This came up in connection with "Spiricom", a device to talk with the dead. I don't think all the facts presented are valid in our world, but maybe in the Beyond they are.

Like a late night group chat with old friends and an old radio playing that's giving off mind bending hot bakelite fumes, smoldering dust on the vacuum tubes and a sprinkling of old cigar smell. A little imagination and anything goes. UFO's, Spooklights, Ball Lightning, messages from outer space, quantum ghosts, the dead speaking from beyond the grave.....

The next morning we wake up with the cell phone ringing or the latest news on the PC, and we realize it was all just a hypnotic trance, that physics just doesn't have any room left anymore for such stuff.

That is, until you read the "real" book of physics: (heavy reading) You can't see most off the stuff out there.

I, more than most here on these forums have explored the various colors of light generated by vacuum tubes when operated at levels within, and far beyond the typical conditions suggested by their manufactured. I have never seen a vacuum tube generate anything remotely resembling an "eerie green glow."

I have however seen a weird green glow come from the die of some late 1970's vintage RF power transistors when operated with the ceramic lid removed, and well outside the normal operating conditions.

It must be dose-dependent. Either you need more brown bakelite or you're not breathing in deeply enough. From page 19:

"... inhaling the peculiar odour of warm dust and other mystic compounds generated and secreted in pre-1940s bakelite brown tube-driven radio equipment has a psycho-narcotic effect ..."

All those Compactron TV Sweep tubes that George uses don't have bakelite bases. No wonder all the old timers insist on the old octal socketed tubes. Part of the audio experience for them is hallucinating "realism" and soundstage on the bakelite vapors.

My two favorite BAST's are octal.....and none of that wafer base stuff either. It doesn't smell right when operated just below the combustion point.

Hmmm, powdered NOS Bakelite cooking spice for that extra dimension in flavor.

Nah, the EPA will never go for it. They'd probably ban the stuff, and then you all will have to throw out those Octal tubes. Not to mention the drug enforcement agencies going after it. A blood test to root out intoxicated audiophile drivers.
