comercial Class A

In the 70's and 80's they were a lot of commercials gimmicks around class A in order to appealed to the Audiophile who wanted the best of both world by promising class A with high power. They were just that : gimmicks.

Square law push pull class A amp can theoretically produce up to x4 the power of a regular class A amp with the same idle dissipation.

😀😀😀: VFet CSX1 😀😀😀

I have experience with Luxman during my highschool years in the early 90s. Back in Canada I was plenty loud with the M-117 (same as M-03) rated 200w x 2 @ 8 ohms. I used Klipsch Chorus speakers.

Today, with wee bit more efficient Klipschorns, the 20 watts x 2 in my CSX1 is EASILY as loud as my Luxman setup back then. Quite simply the 20 watts does not reflect it's true power output. 😎

As a reference on speaker efficiency, Klipsch has been know to exaggerate these figures on their speakers. If I recall correctly, the Chorus were 99db sensitivity and the Khorns 104db. Correct me if i'm wrong but for every 3db in loudness you need a doubling in wattage, and to get a perceived double in SPL you need a x10 factor of amplifier wattage. Me think 5db difference on speaker, with 10 times rated wattage difference 20 watts vs 200watts - there's something i'm missing in this math. Either the speaker efficiency ratings are not right, or the Luxman 200 watts per chan output rating is not right, or the square law excessively exaggerates the true output rating in PP amps.

this should help...

those Precognition gimmicks are good for General Audiophoolery**

not saying that amps are not good, just MumboJumbo is what is always pulling my nerve

though, they (whoever wrote silly claims) can't be bothered with my ramblings, not their target group, for sure :clown:

** in Audio - only at LP Cutter lathes, precognition was good thing

Class A operation by definition is when “the active element remains conducting all of the time”. Various biasing schemes fulfill this criterion. But only some of them are meaningful in context of power audio amplifier. Class A operation is a tool for overcoming the problems of Class AB operation investigated here Power amp OUTPUT STAGE measurements shootout. Not all Class A implementations are successful in that. Conversely, some Class AB implementations can get pretty close.
