RH84 Rev2 - suitable speakers

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any advice or experience on building suitable speakers to go with a RH84 Rev 2 SE amplifier.
I think it will output between 3-5 watts.
I do have Fostex FE126EN in the Fostex BR design box and can partner a sub woofer with them.

However I’m interested in a 8”, 10” or 12” speaker to avoid the use of a sub woofer.

My listening space since moving is very small 3.5m x 3.5m
With Suspended wooden floors (or floorboards)

Thanks

The Fane Sovereighn 12-250TC could be good for this. Advertised as 101dB sensitive, but in reality about 98dB. The only problem is that to go real low you need a huge 275 to 300L ported cabinet (wardrobe style) which will probally be to big for your room. And all big drivers will need a big cabinet.

The question is also, how low and loud does it has to go. The Tang Band 1808 in a 125L bassreflex can go to 36Hz F3 and is decent sensitive (94dB), but is that enough?

Perhaps you might want to consider an enclosure design capable of extracting a bit more bass extension and dynamics from the FE126 than the “factory?” BR enclosure; such as FrugalHorn FH3.
The room described is certainly on the smallish side, but I think the bigger issue might be it’s square dimensions. A larger main driver or separate powered sub(s) would likely exacerbate the issue of room modes, and any acoustic treatment sufficient to deal with those would only impinge further on the floor space.

Thanks Chris,
The listening area is 3.3m x 3.5m but it opens up to the rest of the room which is another 3m x 3m to the left if that makes sense.

This one?

FE126En Factory Reflex, a "cruel joke" - diyAudio

You’d be better to do a sealed box and add woofers, but if yu XO high enuff and damp th event the. cab you have should be suitable.

Hi Dave,

Those pictures of speaker boxes are taken from an old thread of mine I think.

Fostex FE126En Build

I sent the plans to someone in Moldova and he made them for me and did a great job. He now sells them on eBay.

It looks as though I might as well replace them with Fostex FF125WK in the enclosures and rethink the FE 126ENs.

You mentioned using a closed box in conjunction with a subwoofer; what dimensions would you envisage and would it need any added components for a filter etc. And what would you set the crossover on the subwoofer at with the 126s?

Thanks

FF125wk is unfortunately a bit of a dog in the FFxx5wk range — significantly more ringing than the other 4. You would be better with FF105wk especially if you are adding bass help. It is possible to fairly easily tame those peaky bits (harder on the FF125). Broken in the FF125 is quite decent, i have a pair (with those slight tweaks) broken in, in a et of FH3.
