Found some new porn horn

This time from Florence, Italy: Pequod Acoustics

and wondering how much would cost these beauties, hope not Avantgarde Trio level. The horn subwoofer is also interesting; Hydra 8.1 variant could fit in a normal room.

I had a talk sometimes ago with a guy owning a Avantgarde system for almost 10 years which could never make it sound ok going for a Genelec monitor speaker worth 20 times cheaper in the end.
This type of horn backfires as it works both ways picking up back the reflexions as a sthetoscope and creating a lot of weird resonances and much higher back emf too, while its directivity would make everything found in its way vibrate like hell.Some of us know these speakers from other times when dictators would give them a better use 🙂

Some of the Pequods look interesting. Some look weird, but they may be OK, just look odd.
The Polyphemius, done actively with a DSP to set delays and a decent tower to do <100Hz could be good. It would at least look spectacular in a very architectural home. Pity the seams are still visible.

I got invited to listen to a very expensive Duo based system in maybe '02. It was so bad it took all my control not to laugh out loud.
The only other time this has happened was Zu Druids.

"I had a talk sometimes ago with a guy owning a Avantgarde system for almost 10 years WHO could never make it sound ok" sorry for the grammar...It took him a decade to get the point and buy a 3...5000 dollars Genelec pair of active monitors instead...

That's why I littereally hate rich people...I'd probably kill every single millionaire in this world if I could .They can't consider helping their workers with 100 dollars more for a monthly hard job, but they spend huge amounts of money on stupid low quality products advertised the same way as their own "outstanding" managerial skills that made them rich...

Good advice from Brett..

I have to admit I am not a fan of the Duo either, my encounter with a pair driven by 47 labs monoblocks back around 2001 was delightfully awful.

More recent encounters were not better. Some people love them and I have no idea how that is possible. 😉

+1 * 2^100 😛

The one big multi-way system I was involved in was quite the Work of Art, but then he fired it up. 🙁 Managed to make it better, but the room wasn't deep enough to get anywhere near far enough away.

Such kind of horn systems, with huge sensitivities and difference of acoustic lenghts between drivers, are hard to tame. Especially if you insist remaining "purist" using just passives or no more than analog crossovers.
But if you have decent (big) audition space, with present state of DSP art, the sky is the limit. It's like having a F1 car just for yourself.
I just cannot help thinking myself what could be done with an Avantgarde or Ale type horn system...

@Kevin
I'm sorry, from now on i'll be full of love and compassion towards anyone!

@Dorin

DSP looks like the magic solution nowadays for everything...
The Avantgarde guy i spoke about is a malaysian taycoon and he spent around 1 million dollars only for the showroom for those speakers paying for the best guys he could find for the job, then he moved the speakers all around the world and couldn't find a single place to make them sound ok.Now when a billionaire tells you that he was completely fine with a 5000 dollars Genelec active monitors (most probably having a very good DSP inide too) after a decade of trials...it's probably that his opinion should be considered.

Maybe he was looking for something specific which he found on that Genelec monitor. Speaking for myself, I treasure the most the dinamics provided by a good horn system and I am more forgiven with other "features" that come with horns. Really, I can understand the magic of the Genelecs, I listen once to such things in a respectful professional studio, but in my home I prefer horns as bad as they seem to other people.

My system is horn based with bi-radial horns on mids (JBL2440/2380) and highs (Fostex T825). Bass is handled by diy Onken cabinets with Iconic 165-8G 16" woofers (basically a 515-8G). Nothing terribly special but I am happy with it for the most part. (Always room for improvement 😉 ) The system is active 3 way with hybrid tube amps, LR4 XO, DSP based room in the form of MiniDSP SHD. (The room makes the use of horns with pretty tight directivity desirable because of low ceiling and is somewhat narrow.)

GM and Pano have considerably more experience with horns than I do. My objection to this particular horn speaker is very specific, it sounds very distorted to me even at moderate levels. More recently I have heard them a number of times in different rooms with different electronics and yet the impression has not changed.

I have heard a significant number of good sounding horn systems, here in MA I belong to an audio circle that is made up mostly of horn enthusiasts.
