Despite the level, it is clear that the ND950 allows a low XO point.
18Sound drivers should not be ignored. The older 4" drivers were decent, though not great considering the price, so I decided against buying a pair of NSD1480Ns.
However, the latest N3.. drivers (3" dia) are very good, as ErnieM and docali show here.

I've never seen off-axis response curves/directivity sonograms of the Sony horns.
I'm currently at KLIA airport and spotted these. Bass driver is 15-18", the horn is quite a bit bigger. Anyone know what they are?
It took 1.7 years to solve this mystery.
No wonder because these large full range cabinets are Renkus-Heinz Special Order CT-Series > 1st pic.
These were also available in asymmetrical trapezium shaped cabinets.
The Co-Entrant Horns in these full-range cabs are the best iteration of the technology. There were 2 versions, 1"+ 8" (CDT-1) and 2" + 10" (CDT-2).
Both were available in a variety of cabs, some with direct radiators.
For those who consider a point-source system, but cannot or don't want to buy Danley Synergies, a pair of CT5MH/66k mid-high tops is currently offered on ebay.
It's basically a 60x60° CDT-1 in a cab.
Add a pair of 2x15" Renkus-Heinz subs (used for about $200 each) to complete a full-range system with a point-source horn to cover the vocal range and up.

I say definitely to the OP question. I had an old pair of ESS/Heil floor standing speakers, using a 10" midwoofer, a round Heil AMT, and a 10" passive radiator.
I rebuilt them into a roughly 2ft x 2ft x 15" 2 way cabinets with the passive radiators on the sides. The cabinets have 1.25" walls, and a 2.25" baffle, heavily braced and lined with 2" denim insulation on all walls.Rebuilt xovers and new wiring. They play 39hz to 21,000kz. Have almost zero distortion, even at loud levels, and are 95 db efficient.

The balloons of the 60x60° are shown. DI is fairly constant, probably the best of all variants.
I'll check my files for some response plots.

Yes, you can use a PA driver designed for mid-bass in a box below it's Fs. It will not have "flat response", but could be equalized to any response you desire.
In terms of this threads topic, "high SPL, low distortion" you left out important specifications of the speaker, Xmax (4.3mm) and Xlim (13.65mm).
Around 1/3 octave above Fb (box tuning) a 15" driver with 4.3mm Xmax can produce about 101 dB SPL, about an order of magnitude less than the 110-114dB definition of "high SPL" at 1 meter in post #5.
Driven past Xmax, harmonic distortion will increase rapidly from around 10% to 100% or more, not low distortion by anyone's definition. Driven to Xlim, the driver will make very un-musical sounds.
A big box will require less power to drive the speaker past Xmax, but will put out more SPL down low with less power.
The Delta-pro15a surround is capable of 13.65mm one way travel, with most music program material, it's voice coil will burn before the surround will rip.

If I hate it, I can cut it down to 4.7 cuft and screw the end on again. 99.9% of the driver's life will be at 1 w with an occasional peak to 75 W; doubt if I'll burn any voice coils. Scored two Peavey SP2g-2004 yesterday for $400. (been looking for 8 months) I'll use those if I need to put any 500 W/ch outdoor concerts. Like 1812 Overture in the front yard on 4th of July.

True, the original thread title is based on camplo's strictly defined objectives.
100-105 dB is plenty loud enough in an average room and by using pro drivers we've more leeway.
Evidently, we have to consider mechanical limits and associated distortion, otherwise it's advised to follow this example.
Or go right for a 3 way.
