What about video streaming then? When I worked at Intel, one of the big tasks for certain server platforms was transcoding. Because Apple devices dont use the same file format as everything else, this giant 100's of watt CPU has to crank through the whole thing, replacing this byte for that one, in order to serve it out in a format the Apple device can understand.
I wonder how much global power that "just because Steve said so" burns? Perhaps it's not an issue anymore...
Then there's this ridiculous crypto currency crap, where huge numbers of top performing silicon are cranking through algorithms in the "hope" of finding instances of just the right sequence of digits that can "make" a buck. How much energy does that burn away across all the fails?
Then there's the design of server farms - put 'em next to the power generation facility to reduce voltage drop to the place. But there's no city there or anyone that can really use all the heat generated by the gigantic operation, so I guess it just all goes out the tailpipe for the polar bears to make use of.
