Altec 604-8G bulid

Hello all good people out here. The other day I found a couple of 604-8Gs that I purchased from a local studio 30 years ago. I will try to make new boxes for this in the upcoming month or so.
1. question - They need reconing of the woofers. A friend of mine said the I could use the cone meant for the 515 bass. Is this a smart thing to do? And do anyone know where to get this parts?
2. I´m looking for a narrower box than 620 as it will be easier to place in a living room. Is there any other possibilities here?
3. What kind of amplifier would be a good choice here. VALVES? - I do have a Bryston 4B and also a 3B.

Thank you for reading 🙂

First of all, don't worry about power. Even if your room is huge 30-50 watts will likely be excessive. I am currently using a Neurochrome Mod 86 amp on my 605B open baffles, and I can't imagine needing more. Your 604s are a good bit more sensitive. I will also say that they seem to like a reasonably low driving impedence/higher dampening factor. I would guess that may come from the wide frequency range the midbass cone has to cover: weaker control at the lowest end of the spectrum might cause issues in the top end cone breakup.

I had my drivers reconed (and remagnetized) at Great Plains Audio. At least, learn what they have to offer before comitting to an alternative. I realize shipping your 604s to them and back is probably not too attractive.

Good luck, I'm sure they are worth the effort.

I thought there is a slight difference between the 604 cone and the 515 cone, so i would not try it. GPA offers recone kits if i'm right, so call them (calling seems to be the best way to contact them) and see what they can offer.

And i know a guy who runs the 604E's in a 620 cabinet from an old Sugden A21, that is a 15w Class A transistor amplifier, and that is already way to powerfull for this driver in his to european standards big living room (i guess 15x8x3m). I guess the real sensivity is about 100dB/2.83v or so, so most of the time you won't even use one watt of power. These drivers were originally made for the time where amplifiers were tube only and the availeble power was very low.

Yes Cal, I believe that it's the 416 cone. I've used 605s that had the GPA 515 recones. Very dynamic! The 416 usually plays a little lower, tho some of that might have to do with the magnet.

Where's GM? He'll know for sure.

All I know is the 604 started with the original 515 and TTBOMK all models since then has had some type of 515 diaphragm, though in more recent times with different 515 options, not sure which was chosen, so need GPA or a local distributor for them [if any] to confirm.

Depending on the model, the 605 series has always had a basic 803/416 series woofer for a bit more bottom end.

In both cases I've never re-coned or even paid attention to what, if any, differences there might be between the woofer and duplex re-cone kits, though some on the AUB are and might get a quicker response from them than Bill.

That said, awhile back it came to light on FB that GPA has built some customs, so maybe a 515-8 LF[E] based 604 for more bass than even the 416 B/C series 605 is an option.
