Funniest snake oil theories

I have friends who now are saying that global warming is not a reality but a capitalist conspiracy to make profit, and to me, in the face of increasing evidence, I think it is almost a certainty, and this is worrying.

It seems also that the covid19 appearance has worked rather like the dental disclosing agents do for plaque, but in exposing a fundamental flakiness in the population's mental state. Just looking at the body language in the streets and supermarkets confirms the change in many people's attitude.

I couldn't agree more, people don't seem to care what is fact or fiction anymore, as if it's not important. A work colleague goes on about the prevalence of confirmation bias, and he's right, people just see what they want to see and believe what's the most convenient for them to be true. When I find something interesting on the 'net, I always check it out from other sources.

Me too. They debunk science with a bunch of "what ifs" and "did you know" nonsense.

Electric cars are another one. We can't have electric cars BECAUSE BECAUSE BECAUSE. It's so nonsensical and it stresses me out and I've been telling people to please skip it because it's stressing me out. And they don't stop, so I find myself avoiding my friends.

These are big steps backward. Our society is hundreds of years behind the times and getting stupider. Everyone has forgotten why there was such an emphasis on science in the 1960s and now history is repeating itself.

“Getting stupider”
I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed but do have a firm grasp on reality......it’s downright depressing going into public these days and seeing first hand what we’ve become as a society.

Edit; On topic.....it’s no wonder snake oil runs rampant in all aspects of sales. What happened to buyer beware?

What happened to Truth In Advertising?

Used to be, companies were held responsible and fined, even shut down, for false advertising.
Today, it seems, you rarely hear about a company being sued or fined, due to disclaimers hidden in their junk.
And attaching that sneaky "LLC" label allows them to further avoid penalties.

What cracks me up is the endless advertising of small law firms, luring you to hop on the class action train "If you or a loved one has been affected or died or had cancer, etc., from using Xproducts".

Honesty and reputation importance has taken a back seat in modern times.
Greed and confusion has reared its ugly head instead.

Television has been making Americans stupid for a long time. I watch very little and in fact I can hardly stand to be in a room with a TV on.

It amazes me when I'm in a room and everyone is hypnotized by the television. I just want to smash it with a hammer.

It seems that if you want to get right into the minds of Americans, then all you have to do is put it on the TV. I view it as a surrogate of reality, because what's on TV is most decidedly not real. Yet it seems to me that TV is the ultimate reality for many Americans, The One That Must Be Believed. Television is arguably the most influential force in American society today. It has great potential for danger.

I think the buck stops with the person signing the check, your referencing a time when there was no way (or at least quite difficult) to research a purchase.

I do agree the litigious nature we’ve become accustomed to is not helping.

So is this a worldwide phenomenon?

I had been of the view that it was a UK thing, with the spread of celebrity 'culture' since the start of the century, (an oxymoron if ever there was one).

A line from a song from Cat Stevens' LP "Modern Times" comes to mind, in the track
"I really don't believe what's going on"; "She walks like Greta Garbo and talks like Yogi Bear".

Twenty years ago British culture described what was happening as "dumbing down", and that certainly is how I view it when compared with the activity and vigour I knew as a mid 20s developing guy, surrounded by active students in vigorous debate.

That period pointed out the problems which are now widespreadly discussed in news and concern, and yet not really being dealt with incisively until recently.

If this is worldwide, it really does not bode well for humanity to get out of the current malaise. I think that many here are of the view that interactive debate does benefit the arrival of truth in 'our discipline', but we need it everywhere because disorder spreads disorder, into what may have been ordered.

Most of my admittedly limited selection of music I hold dear because of what it said at the time, as a reference in the art for me, because of what it said about culture, and also a guide for my own musical aspirations.
