I recently completed a tube line preamp kit which takes eight 12AY7/6072A tubes. With NOS tubes approaching $300/ea I thought I'd compare the various models available from new manufacturers

There are gold plated and regular 12AY7s/6072As available from JJ. Electro-harmonics and others probably do too.


Any recommendations?

I must be sitting on a Gold mine then, because I've got loads of spare RCA, GE, 12AY7's in my stock. 😀
They make great preamps and phase splitters driving 6BQ5's and such.

I have supplied a number of JJ 12ay7 to microphone use, with zero complains.
I know that eurotubes.com ( no affiliation) has them in US .

Eurotubes.com in Milwaukee Oregon sells JJ 12AY7 tubes.

They get their tubes direct from JJ in Slovakia.
Then, Eurotubes re-tests them, including noise tests.

The JJ 12AY7 have spiral filaments.

I use the JJ 12AY7 tubes as the input tube in some of my amplifiers.
They work very well in that application.
I drive right over to Eurotubes.com to pick up my JJ tubes.

But I do not have a tube phono preamp.
All my former tube phono preamps used 12AX7 tubes.
