Choosing a DAC/AMP combo

Those inexpensive boards are overall great for the price. I have had not so good of results with another one in that series, but the ones like you’ve shown have worked fine.

Should be a great way to start out, I like the ones I have, especially with smaller, full range speakers. Might want to shoot for a bit higher amps for the power supply, like 4A or so.

There is no audio DAC company named Wolfram. If you mean Wolfson, that company no longer exists as it was bought by Cirrus Logic 6 years ago. Regardless, Wolfson's DACs were ALL multi-bit sigma-delta and NOT based on DCS ring DAC.

Further, the other sigma-delta DACs you talk about are NOT 1-bit. They are mostly 5 or 6-bit sigma-delta converters.

I'd just suggest you don't post with a tone of authority on things you clearly don't understand.

You may want to review this paper as it is still quite relevant:

Other than being wrong about practically everything in your post, yes, it was perfectly valid.

Not trying to be a jerk, but you're 100% wrong that they are all 1-bit and you are wrong that Wolfson DACs are based on DCS's ring DAC. It reads like a bad advertisement for R-2R or similar converters.

It's called attempting to advise someone via a technical breakdown on a subject and getting 90% of the details wrong.

Of course, you don't do that because you have the courtesy to at least attempt to verify the veracity of what you post when it's not an opinion. I guess we should all just go with our feelings and double down on inaccurate statements?

I politely corrected him the first time, then he spit the same garbage back out.

I just meant in the context of ignoring the facts in the face of what you feel is correct. Certainly, I felt a certain way and that is subjective :). This has taken up far too much text now, but I only meant to imply that I try not to go to threads where I am totally clueless and dispense advice full of errors.

Well since we've had what ostensibly is a bad ad for a true multibit DAC, here's an advertisement (good or bad? you decide) for another multibit DAC which I hope will delight the OP : lingDAC - cost effective RBCD multibit DAC design

@speculardecay - I briefly listened to the Khadas Tone2 DAC which was being demo'd at the Shanghai show a couple of months ago. It sounded fairly typical for an S-D DAC - which to me (subjectively) is borderline unlistenable. My wife said 'no improvement over listening to my phone'. Very nice package though and I applaud their attempts to fix up single-ended connections with their 3 terminal RCA. Not sure it'll catch on.

While I can't say I am on-board with your design philosophy, it's at least well executed.

If non-sigma-delta is a design requirement, I prefer AD1862 or PCM1704, but then I have no problem with sigma-delta :). The OP didn't mention price, but I'd probably buy an RME ADI-2 DAC if it were in the budget.

If you don't need a lot of power, don't care about world-beating specs, and want something really cheap, the Loxjie A30 is cute.

Unlistenable? That is harsh hehe!
Do you have any recommendation that you (and your wife) consider listenable?
Thanks!
