Fullrange driver as tweeter for OLA Advent

Asked in multi-way section without success: My idea to use the Original Large Advent (OLA) woofers in larger sealed cabinets crossed about 0.8-1k with 2-3” modern full-range driver as a tweeter. Any suggestion for the driver?

Thanks

My favorites for this kind of appliactaion are FF85wk and Alpair 5.2/3. FaitalPro 3F22 also seems to be close. Maybe CHN 50 if you are on a tight budget.

Just use the standard Advent box and run a piece of 4” PVC fom the baffle open out the back, Stuff as an aperiodic midTL. XO can probably go as low as 250 Hz.

The 3fe22 is a good speaker, it can be made great with treatments on the cone/dustcap, the old felt behind the cone trick, inside the frame. Some cone tweeters in the 70's used this. The hard part is to mount the felt ring so it doesn't touch the cone or spider. I use 1 regular layer of felt closest to the cone, and 1 or 2 layers of home Depot moving blanket felt( its denser and absorbs more sound. The felt is glued using 3m super 77, then hot glued to the frame.

Q for Planet10 - do you think aperiodic venting of the Large Advent could flatten its mild bump at resonance ? IIRC my KLH17 sounds better in ways (lower Qtc).

FWIW I've used coax woofer which essentially have a small spider between woofer cone and horn as a dust shield. That spider can emit a lot of treble junk. A disc of felt or even foam to cover that element will greatly reduce spurious emissions.

Saw your post on another thread detailing the mods you did. Very interesting, insight try it myself.

The LA had a bit smaller enclosure than optimal to give the effect of a LF boost to sell more speakers. So yes, i expect that pushing the box aperiodicc would not hurt. PuzzleKoat on the paper cone woofer also makes a significant improvement. Some bracing and upgrading XO also.

The other thing i would think about is a piece of 4” PVC pipe thru the back, replace the tweeter with a good 3” FR and biamp at the BS (guess 3-400 Hz)

The pipe is a low budget implementation of a 1/4 wavelength midTL. Better would be if you could taper it, say 10:1. Stuff with low density “fluff” right behind the driver to quite dense by the end of the line. Ideally very little comes out the terminus, and the impedance curve is flattened.
