The dreaded 7mm screw

Does anyone have a current source for 7mm set screws at reasonable prices in the US? I saw some on eBay for $2.50 each but it would be more cost effective to buy 2,000 of them from China.

I guess "reasonable" is subjective, up to $1 ea. is acceptable but that's pushing it.

Thanks Perry, I'll send Matt an email and see where that takes me. I was pretty sure I had seen a referral from you somewhere and was thinking it was in the tutorial and just couldn't find it.

McMaster-Carr has a limited selection of M7 machine screws: McMaster-Carr

Tom

Thank you for the suggestion Tom. I checked McMaster and Grainger before posting and came up empty on set (grub) screws. Hex/socket head screws would do in a pinch but anything other than set screws for installation makes me uncomfortable. I've seen them short on the chassis before.

Can you consider grinding or filing the heads off?

Shoot me a PM if you are in the US as I keep them in stock.
Message sent.

I could but it would be easier to drill and tap the blocks for 8mm. I don't have any hardware to affix 7mm bolts in a vise. It's really easy to mess up the threads while shortening and cutting a new drive slot.

A search for M7 pulled 147 results, none of them set screws. I don't know what you saw but I couldn't find any in the multiple categories I checked.

Depends on your means and methods. I would clamp the screws between two pieces of plywood in a vise. An angle grinder with a grinding disc could do it without putting too much force on the screw, I suspect.

Now, there are sources of the screws but before there were, a Dremel 420 cutting disc could be used to cut a slot in screws with stripped (or no) heads.
