BoxSim Vented Enclosure Port Size

Hello,
i am at the beginning of my speaker enclosure design journey so please forgive dumb questions.

The four DQ40TZF-02 (4" drivers) i ordered have arrived and after a few hours on BoxSim V-II i am starting to get the hang of sealed cabinet design and have a tight 4lt design that might be nice as PC speakers.

So my next step was to look at a ported box, i have tried various design and
16 lt. 50hz fb look a good starting point. But i can't find in BoxSim how to calculate the Port Length or Port Area. Have i missed something.

I had a web look and found:
Speaker Box Enclosure Designer / Calculator
and
Port Length Calculator

But there results don't seem to compare with each other, hence i need some guidance please.

Many thanks in adavnce imk

Greets!

No experience with BoxSim, though would be very surprised if it doesn't have the necessary vent design routine included.

Re on-line calculators; sadly, there's lots of incorrect vent design math out 'in the wild' and in your case both are incorrect, though of these two, this one at ~1.5 Hz too high is closest to Hornresp, a well proven software, but then our hearing acuity down low isn't good enough to hear the difference, so unless you're a perfectionist, it's good enough IME/IMO: Speaker Box Enclosure Designer / Calculator

Iirc it is under the “extras” tab on the top bar. I think it is a manual calc not automatic from the Fb in the main part of the programme. My pc is dead at the moment so can’t check but looking at screen shots I think it is there.

Hello GM and Ugg10 and many thanks for your comments.
I had a deeper look at BoxSim and found the port Tab, yes your are correct in saying it is not not fully integrated into the main application, hence it is going to be some work.

GM I had a look at a tutorial video on Hornresp and well it look very comprehensive so i wonder if too much of a learning curve for a novice. I download it and try it out.

In the mean time I have found WinISD and used it to build two sealed and one vented designs around the same driver and it it nice that it allows you to view the performance graphs of multiple designs at the same time. So i am wondering how well WinISD is regarded by enclosure designers?

Again many thanks imk

WinISD's early versions were good for comparing multiple sims and hard to screw up a sealed alignment, but otherwise only the old 'pro' version and newest replacement is good enough for basic sealed, vented when properly used.

HR can have an intense learning curve for doing TL/horn based customs, but its 'System Designer' does complete horn alignments and its various speaker design Wizards allow you to literally 'slide' your way to a [complex] design in real time, so while it can be intimidating and with a 'HELP' file that sometimes gets the best of me, there's always plenty of folks around to help and/or use the forum 'search' feature and if all else fails, its designer welcomes questions, upgrade options suggestions, etc.: Hornresp

Thanks!

The link I initially found for a V2.00 version only listed an earlier one, so assumed the recently posted results was current.

Anyway, found the V2.00 in English, but before I install it, I'm curious if it's a 'stand alone' program like Hornresp or do I need Excel/whatever for it to work properly on a Win 7 Pro/64 laptop?

TIA,

GM

Hello GM,
Is standalone windows app, i have run it in win7 and win10 64bit pro although it is native 16bit app. I hope you find it useful, it seems very comprehensive and probably much more than i will every use or understand.

1. When you install it and start it for 1st time a window pops up with basic instructions, think good idea is to copy paste this info into a text file and save it.

2. The simulation don't work unless you create an amplifier/driver circuit consisting of an amplifier output, wire and a driver. Hence click:
Amplifier 1-> Cross Over Network
Then in the little cells/boxes Right Click to create the basic three components;
Amp output
Driver
Wire
to create a simple circuit.. sorry to laborer the point but it had me scratching my head 1st time i tried to get it to work.

All best imk
