Moray James' Karlson 1/4 wave T-line cabinet for FE167E, etc.

Long time Karlson experimenter Moray James made this innovative little design back in the days when Job Ulfman's Karlson Speaker forum was active and took it to a Hi Fi show in 2004.

(Moray had a stoke this past July with complications so we can give good thoughts and praters towards a full recovery - plus there is a GoFundMe where one might help a bit with things). Fundraiser by Rachel Zhang : Support Moray to go through challenging times

At a later point, Moray "raised" the wings so their lower intercept was with the top of the speaker. Myself, being a stubborn/strict Karlson interpreter, would experiment with aperture flare, top gap, and probably XRK971's suggestion of Melamine sponge pads.

The cabinet's picture taken from the front may be one of Moray's other designs as its aspect appears taller than the one featured in the plans. I'm sure he'll clarify.

With Moray's kind permission, I present details for that design

yes I did take out most of the stuffing and I shortened the length of the tapers so they terminated to the cabinet side walls just at the top of the woofer (this eliminates the cavity resonances of the original Karlson design) and I ran the cabinets on their sides with the woofers facing to the side walls of the room with the centre line of the tapers at my seated ear level woofers on axis to about my shoulders.

There are two designs here both were built at about the same time, the version shown with all the fiberglass was the one I took to Denver in 04. It is easy to see how with just two small changes it can be turned into a Karlsonator. I was building a number of versions at the time when life managed to get in the way of R&D and I went on a another path for a time but I still want to come back. This time with the Tannoy Revolution XT DC drivers.

You will have to forgive me as most of my info on these designs is on other computer drives which I can no longer access and my memory right now is shaky and it takes a lot of energy to access and can be at times confusing. This is supposed to get better but such time frames are different for everyone. I just have to work on it and see what comes and in the mean time keep looking for silver linings in everything.

I would like to thank Rachel who has been an angel helping me to do so many things and all the friends who have joined in to help as well. So many friends so much kindness I cannot tell you how this makes me feel without getting emotional. What an amazing community and family who share our love for audio technology and music. Thank you all so very much. Thanks to my new baby granddaughter Norah who was born the day before I had my stroke she is my silver lining.

Neat - maybe reduce the fiberglass by a lot as that will be aperiodic when that densely packed. I would line half the walls with thin melamine pads. Use fiberglass only behind the driver.

I should have added that I think the very best way to line the 1/4 wave line is to line just one wall start behind the woofer and keep the lining on the same side to the length of the line start to finish. I also agree that melamine foam is outstanding material butt it does cost a lot. I concur re damping at the rear of the driver and in a Karlsonator could also be placed in the stub above the woofer, this all has to be played with to see what works best.

I am so happy to see that all the years of support Fred has give to Karlson designs and the community has come to this now with the help of xrk971 with your modeling skills on the computer and your fresh construction ideas and sharing attitude inspiring so many others now who are experimenting. Karlson's do some amazing things.

at Ebay (and probably Amazon) its $7 direct from China to one's door for one hundred Melamine sponges.

I'm curious as to the effects subjective and measured of a curved upper reflector vs canted or fully perpendicular panel above the baffle in K designs, and how to determine an effective one without trial and error.

More of Moray's K-T-line speakers - One made for FE126E

just a beautiful size. about 6" w x 9" -10" t x 5.5" d, 5/8" MDF. - perhaps someone here good at drafting can reconstruct a working drawing. Maybe Moray will make some comments upon its range and proper damping procedure.
