A better (but costlier) alternative is to use the silvered braid of a coaxial you just stripped (be sure to strip it only when you need it): it acts as a real solder magnet, much more effective than "official" wick.
You need to wet it with a very small amount of flux (easily available), and that's it.
For intensive desoldering, it would be expensive, but for the odd, single need it is perfect

And the copper will be tarnished too, which won't help. I don't know if there's
an official shelf life for the stuff, but I suspect so...
