Eminence Alpha 15A vs. Goldwood GW-1858

Hey any of you guys tried the Goldwood 18" GW 1858 and the Eminence 15" Alpha 15A on open baffle?

I looked everywhere on the ENTIRE internet lol, and nobody has posted the characteristics between these 2 cheap high QTS drivers in OB? I know Martin King documented designs with them (The 18 plays louder and lower) but there is no description of the sound difference. I want to give a crack at a pair of those 18" on another system for fun, but is it as fast as the 15A? I just want to find out if the 18" perform better than the 15" on the same U baffle up to 500hz?

Thanks in advance!

Ive got a pair of eminence alpha15 pro's. I have a small condo but these put out more than adequate bass for OB IMO. In fact, thats why I bought them. I kept hearing how I wouldnt get any bass so I needed massive speakers, just how loud are these people listening? WIth my ASP250 amps using active, these get PLENTY loud. Maybe not enough for 1 watt tubes though

I've got a pair of Alpha-15s. They're OK for OB. I've moved on to multiple 12" drivers as they fit my room/cabinet better. So the Alphas now sit in a box...

If anyone wants to buy a pair of Alpha-15As, feel free to contact me.

That's great Eli one pair is enough for me too, but 2 per side is more fun I think. I guess it all depends on the size of your room and how close you are to the speakers. I am in a basement so I don't feel as much impact from the sound. I think that's why I prefer 4. Just wondering how the 18" would sound by comparison.

Nice! Which 12" drivers do you use can I ask? Variety is the spice of life so it's good to try new setups. Congrats!

I've heard the GW-18s and thought they were pretty good. I think John Busch had an PB with 2 per side, went crazy low and played pipe organ well.
I built an OB set with two GRS-15s per side and liked it. Gave them a friend and he still loves them years later.

Maybe John will chime in.

$0.02 worth

IMHO, the Goldwood in an OB application is far better than the Emi Alpha 15. Less break up to deal with and is surprisingly rugged. Larger motor. Lower F/S. About the same price. The larger cone area couples better with the air.

I have used the Goldwood drivers in MJK's H-Frames for years now crossed at around 70hz -24db.. Really impressive imo as bass augmenters slash subs .. I think they're really underrated probably because of price etc dunno.. They sound pretty accurate to me with how I use them.. The sound in the H-Frame any higher up into the vocal range is not for me.. Never tried a U baffle that way so ymmv, and also never heard the Alpha. I'd go for the Goldwood just for the extra grunt and surface area over the Alpha.. Cheers.
